Festivals, cleaning on calendar

Friday, September 25, 2009

The upcoming weekend isn’t as crowded with events as the weekend past, though enough activities remain to keep area residents entertained from tonight until Monday.

Clean up

For people who want evidence of their activities, the second set of work days of a major project, Emporia Clean Sweep, will be held Friday and Saturday. The effort is part of the Building Futures Campaign through the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, with major assistance from the city of Emporia.

Dumpsters will be placed on Lincoln Street north of Drury Lane and on Center Street between 13th and 15th avenues.

As part of the clean-up, an assortment of different types of trash will be accepted at the drop-off spots, including appliances, tree limbs, tires, couches and furniture, boards or building materials, computers and monitors, paints and cleaners, trash and more. Television sets may be dropped off for a $10 fee.

People who want to volunteer to help in the clean-up may call Patty Gilligan at 343-4200.

Slice of American Life

Actors at Emporia State University will present two one-act comedies this weekend in the Ronald Q. Frederickson Theatre at Roosevelt Hall on campus.

“Lone Star” and “Laundry and Bourbon” by James McLure will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The comedies are described as a “funny and poignant slice of American life.” They are presented in part by ESU’s Performing Arts Board 2009.

Habitat for Humanity

Building will begin on the next Habitat for Humanity house on Sunday morning at 215 S. East St.

Eric Priest, a spokesman for the organization, said that floor work will be done in the morning, and walls will be put up in the afternoon.

The work is done by volunteers, and by the family that eventually will move into the house. A portion of their payment is “sweat equity.”

More information about helping in the construction and finishing work may be had by calling Priest at 342-2649.

Hartford Harvest Day

Hartford will have its 19th annual Harvest Day beginning with biscuits and gravy at the Methodist Church at 6:30 a.m. A 5K Fun Run/Walk, a tractor roll, bingo, horseshoe pitching, a dunk tank, Oz olympics, bed races and talent show are among the activities planned for festival-goers.

Foods and crafts booths, a parade, a ham and bean dinner, an evening barbecue and a street dance also are on the schedule.

BroomWeed

Festival

Music will be in the air at Cottonwood Falls, with the weekly Friday night jam session at the Emma Chase Cafe spreading on Saturday to a full-blown BroomWeed Festival.

Jam sessions will be going all day Saturday throughout downtown Cottonwood Falls, and a special guest performance planned Saturday evening.

More information may be had by calling (620) 273-6020.
