Lyon County commissioners had a light agenda during Thursday’s action session with the agenda only consisting of consent items and a proclamation on Family Day.
Family Day is a day set aside to eat dinner with one’s children. Family Day is celebrated on the fourth Monday of September.
“Family day is a national movement that reminds parents about the importance of parental engagement in our children’s lives and encourages parents to have frequent family dinners with their children as an effective way to prevent their children from abusing substances,” Rhonda Gordon, Lyon County extension agent, said in a Wednesday column in the Gazette
Family Day was created by CASA and studies done by CASA have shown that the more children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they smoke, drink and use drugs, Gordon said.
“Family meals are the perfect setting for a family to sit down together and listen to what’s going on in their lives,” Gordon said. “It can be surprising what you learn when you take the time to listen.”
In other business, commissioners approved the consent agenda which included warrants payable in the amount of $129,929.80; the District Court’s purchase of eight computers for the amount of $9,759.20, two scanners for a cost of $1,724.32 and a software conversion system in the amount of $10,500; and authorized the director of Community Corrections to pay for the Third Annual District Challenge.
