Emporia State’s soccer team played its most complete game of the season in Thursday’s home opener against Southwest Baptist, but because of some bad luck, ESU was once again on the losing side, 2-0.
The Hornets had two unfortunate bounces that led to two SBU goals.
“This is by far one of the better games we played,” freshman goalie Nikki Schmitz said. “It sucks knowing it was the backs’ mistakes and my mistakes that cost the game, but we also do need to finish. It’s both sides.”
Finishing has been a problem throughout the season for the ESU offense, which has scored only four goals in seven games. Part of the problem has been a lack of shots, and ESU was once again outshot 35-11.
But the Hornets had several good chances, most of which ended up floating over the goal or wide.
