When Garin Higgins’ offense has worked best — back when he was taking Northwestern Oklahoma State to national championship games — the running game was the focal point.
“Controlled the clock with our option game and been able to set up the play-action pass,” Higgins said of his best offenses. “That’s what we do.”
This season when Higgins’ offense was at its best, in Week One against Southwestern Oklahoma State, Emporia State followed the blueprint, running 58 times for 399 yards.
Last week, Higgins and the Hornets abandoned the running game, and the offense was at its worst — six interceptions and only 13 points.
“We’re a team that runs the football,” Higgins said. “We probably got away from that last week, but some of it was dictated where we were at within the game.
