Adoptable dogs, cats and kittens will be part of a fashion show, Rescues and Runways, beginning at noon at the Flinthills Mall on Saturday.
It is one of several special events and activities planned in conjunction with the mall’s annual Fall Festival Tent Sale, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Sixteen members of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority at Emporia State University have volunteered their time to be models at the show.
Rescues and Runways will culminate the end of a month-long drive by the maurices store at the mall to draw attention to the number of abandoned dogs and cats who need to be adopted, and to raise food, toys and other supplies for the shelters that care for them until they are adopted or euthanized.
Lydia Cope, marketing-administrative assistant for the mall, said that donations for the shelters will be taken through Saturday.
The shelters still need new or used towels and blankets, canned kitten food, dog and cat toys, rawhides and chew bones, and small litter boxes.
“Those are the major things they need right now,” Cope said. “For every donation that people make, they get a 20 percent off coupon from maurices.”
Representatives of the animal shelter will be at the mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with several dogs, cats and kittens for potential adopters to see.
A silent auction also will be held as part of the animal-oriented project, for items that include tickets for a Granada Theatre performance, a Midas Touch tanning package, one-month use and three personal training sessions at Walburn’s gym and gift certificates from Sweet Granada, Bravo hair salon, Mary Kay, Cookie Lee jewelry, Walmart and Second Love.
The auction begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
A number of mall merchants will roll their racks and shelves out to a big-top tent that will be set up at Flinthills Mall on Saturday, and entertainment will be available for youngsters and adults.
People who enjoy singing in public can take part in karaoke from noon to 4 p.m. The Roga Pumpkin Patch will have a pumpkin display throughout the day.
Winding Road Equine Rescue will have pony rides and also will bring one or two adoptable horses to the mall.
Bluestem Swingers square-dance club members will perform at 3 p.m., and Blue Fox will demonstrate its grills and sell the results of the demos to the public.
