Veterans meeting
A meeting to explain veterans benefits will be at the American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 at 1:05 p.m. Friday. Area veterans and their families may ask specific questions of state Veterans Affairs repreesentatives. This is part of the Veterans Affairs’ tour of Legion posts in Kansas.
Democrats serving
Lyon County Democrats are joining other county Democratic parties across Kansas for a weekend of serving Friday through Sunday. Those who attended the club’s breakfast on Sept. 12 signed up to work Emporia’s Clean Sweep on Friday. Others are encouraged to help during Clean Sweep throughout the weekend as it fits individual schedules. For information, call Denise Dorcey, 794-1622.
Give blood
The Red Cross is having a blood drive from 1 to 6:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 823 Merchant St. For an appointment, call toll-free 1-800-448-3543.
Family night
Family Night @ The Library will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Emporia Public Library. The theme is “Big and Bad.” The event is free for families with children of all ages. The evening, which is free, includes stories, crafts and fun about big bad wolves.
Brief road closing
The Allen Road, also known as Road L, will be closed on Tuesday between Roads 330 and 340, so Lyon County road and bridge workers can replace a crossroad culvert.
A department spokesperson said that the work is expected to begin around 8:30, after school buses have passed on their routes. It should reopen about 3:30 p.m. the same day.
