Losses continue at Newman

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Newman Regional Health continues to operate at a significant loss, the hospital’s board of trustees discussed during Wednesday’s monthly meeting.

The hospital had an operating loss of $193,914 for August. However, total operating expenses were favorable to budget by $169,241. Net loss for the month was $145,567 and year-to-date net loss is $1,192,296. The hospital budgeted for a year to date loss of $66,389.

Patient service revenue was a big contributing factor to the hospital’s operating loss. The hospital’s inpatient revenues were under budget for the month by $611,038 with 242 fewer patient days than budgeted. Average daily census was 38.3 compared to a budgeted average daily census of 46.1. Outpatient revenues were $482,984 under the budgeted amount.

In other matters:

• The hospital board approved the hospital’s new vision statement, “Newman Regional Health will provide comprehensive health care services to residents of Lyon County and the surrounding area.”

• The board approved the strategic plan for 2010 to 2013. The strategic plan focuses on the areas of growth, medical staff development, community relations, facility and technology and service and quality.

• Board members listened to a presentation about quality measures at the hospital. Quality measures were evaluated in the areas of inpatient services, outpatient services, surgery and emergency room services.

With insurance companies paying out so little is it any wonder? Not to mention that fact that they deny claims left and right leaving many patients unable to pay the enormous bill. It has to have something to do with it. I am sure there is more to it, I am just saying!

it has less to do with insurance, and population loss, than it does, that many of the docs at newmans transfer patients out of town, when they can get the same care here. then the other hospital gets paid for their stay. god forbid, we treat anyone here. Newmans is not a hospital anymore. it's a triage center.
