Since Emporia High’s 2008 season ended, Danny Goodman has grown as a leader and shrunk as a physical being. Both developments have helped Emporia High immensely this year during its 2-1 start.
Spartans offensive line coach Phil Thornton says he’s seen the senior center mature into a leader since the end of last season, thanks to what he calls “an attitude shift” on Goodman’s part. Now, Goodman’s leading a Spartan offensive line that’s been a pivotal part of a strong start to 2009 that’s surprised just about everyone but the Spartans themselves.
“The biggest difference is, Danny’s becoming his own man,” Thornton said. “He knows what’s right to do. He doesn’t have to be told that stuff anymore — he does it. He does what’s right, and that way, he’s matured a good deal. Instead of being a follower, he’s turned into a leader — and as a leader, he’s very effective.”
