First-time home buyers in Emporia may be eligible for assistance with downpayment and closing costs thanks to a grant to the city from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka.
The $247,500 grant will help in the purchase of 40 homes and will also help with 25 home repair projects in Emporia.
Home buyers interested in the grant will have to get a home loan through CoreFirst Bank in Emporia, according to city housing specialist Jeff Lynch. The home must be a single-family dwelling within the city limits, and must be appraised at no more than $90,000 in value. Homes in the program are for sale on the open market; they are not government- or city-owned, Lynch said.
Qualified applicants will receive direct assistance in the form of $4,000 that will go toward downpayment and closing costs.

Another good move; the more people who own homes and keep them up, the better off the rest of us are.
