Emporia gets $300,000

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Emporia will be getting help to pay for street improvements thanks to a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.

The 50/50 matching grant is intended to help with economic development in the area. The money will be used for street improvements near the new Hill’s plant on Weaver Street.

“It will be an ingress/egress road going to Hill’s and REG from east of Weaver Street,” said Assistant City Manager Mark McAnarney. “Penny Lane will be extended east and it will serve both Hill’s and REG. It gives them another exit.”

Staff at the city’s engineering department now will work on putting together bid specifications in preparation for the project.

The grant was announced Tuesday by the office of Sen. Pat Roberts.
