With one day of rest between meets, Emporia High’s gymnastics squad managed to post its best team score of the year on Monday at the first of its two home invitationals.
Competing against three Shawnee Mission schools and Newton, the Spartans finished in fourth place out of the five squads, two days after they finished 12th out of 14 teams at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational. Along with its high team score for the year at 79.4, Emporia posted four individual personal bests for the season and got one of its best gymnasts, junior Kaitlyn Miller, back in action.
“I’m real impressed, just because we didn’t really have much of a rest (after) Saturday’s meet,” EHS coach Barbara Clark said.
All-arounder Haley Risley led the Spartans, recording season personal highs on the balance beam, where she scored a 7.0, and on the bars, where she logged a 5.1. Risley had the Spartans’ best scores on the beam, on the vault with an 8.3 to tie her season best, and on the floor with a 7.275. Her all-around score of 27.675, however, fell short of placing.
