Emporia school board agenda

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

A new track at Emporia High School and changes in district buildings to conserve energy are on the agenda Wednesday night for the Emporia board of education.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in Mary Herbert Education Center.

The vote on the energy improvements and track resulted from a district-wide study completed by Custom Energy of Overland Park, a subsidiary of ConEdison.

At a meeting in August, Koby Kampschroeder of Custom Energy showed board members details of efficients the company had recommended in its “Facility Conservation and Improvement Program.”

The changes would require expenditures, but were estimate to produce about $7 million in savings in a 20-year period.

Among the recommendations were replacing out-dated boilers at EHS, installing more efficient types of fluorescent lighting, doing ceiling work at some schools around the lighting, replacing toilet valves to conserve water, installing sensors to turn lights on or off as needed and installing a climate control system in gymnasiums that could adjust to serve the numbers of people actually in a gym, rather than the maximum that could be there, and using sensor lights on vending machines that would keep lights off until someone walked past.

The cost of the project will depend on whether the board selects the entire plan or chooses only portions of the recommended changes. The project will be eligible for federal stimulus participation through the lender, according to earlier reports.

Custom Energy estimated that a new track at the high school, under a separate contract, would cost $450,000.

The company also recommended changing the EHS football field grass to turf as part of the energy-saving plan.

Also during the meeting, Superintendent John Heim will report on official enrollment figures. The consent agenda will include site council memberships, contracts for EHS use of the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, and a request for a national trip or excursion from the EHS Marching Pride Band.

The board also will be asked to accept the annual accreditation report for the district.
