Flags lowered

Monday, September 21, 2009

TOPEKA (AP) — Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for two days this week to honor two soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The lowered flags will honor Cpl. Daniel Cox of Parson on Monday and Sgt. Tyler Juden of Winfield on Tuesday. Both men were 23 when they died Sept. 12 in separate attacks.

Cox was killed in the Wardak Province when his unit came under attack from a roadside bomb and small arms fire.

Juden was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire near Turan, Afghanistan.

Parkinson says the thoughts and prayers of the entire state are with the men’s families, friends and communities. He added that their “bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

I am glad to see this Gov. has ordered the flags to be lowered in honor and memory of these brave men. I do not recall the past Gov. ordering anything like that.

newme314,
It astounds me to see comments like yours accusing former Governor Sebelius of something so grave. She attended every funeral of Iraq and Afghanistan Kansas war dead, and yes, saw to the lowering of flags to half staff for those heroes. You need to apologize!!!

Why would someone need to apologize for not recalling something?

Because it was a cheap shot by an anonymous person who thinks nobody would standup for another individual who was wrongly slandered. And it is what you do in a civilized society when you wrong someone.

I think this is a great way to honor those who gave all.

I do wonder about the inconsistencies of the flag positions at the Social Security office and the USDA office. Monday AM, the Social Security office was at full staff, and the USDA at half staff. I have often noticed this; that one is lowered for a memorial reason, and the other is not.

How is it a cheap shot not to recall something. I honestly don't remember if this was done before this time or ever. What does that make me? Just read it as it is written. This person is glad that it is being done now and doesn't recall it happening before, that's it.
