Harclerode a finalist for teaching honor

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Jeline Harclerode was named Region One Teacher of the Year for secondary education at a meeting Saturday in Salina.

The honor puts her in line to be named Kansas Teacher of the Year by the Kansas Department of Education.

Harclerode, who teaches at Emporia Middle School, earlier was selected master teacher for the Emporia school district and was chosen as one of seven Master Teachers for 2009 by Emporia State University.

"I was quite surprised," Harclerode said in an interview Sunday evening. "I did not expect it to go past Salina, so I was kinda shaky yesterday when they announced it."

The regional Teachers of the Year are divided according to congressional districts, with one elementary and one secondary teacher representing each region. Runners-up in each category also were chosen.

The regional winners will spend some of the next semester traveling around the state, working with and studying other school districts, and other related duties.

The statewide winners in elementary and secondary Kansas Teacher of the Year competitions will be announced on Nov. 21st at a conference in Wichita.

Excellent. There are many gifted teachers, in Emporia and elsewhere. It is always nice to recognize at least some of them. Good Job
