White biographer shares stories with Emporia students

Students at William Allen White Elementary School recently got an inside look at the life of their school’s namesake.
Kansas author Beverley Buller was a guest at the elementary school built across the street from White’s home at Ninth Avenue and Exchange Street. Buller has done extensive research on White, and her book, “From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White,” is the first biography about the famous Gazette editor written for young readers. The book was published in 2007 and is currently included on the reading list for the 2010 William Allen White Children’s Book Award.
The author was in Emporia a week ago to talk with third- and fourth-grade students at W.A. White School and fifth and sixth graders at the Lowther Intermediate schools. White librarian Jenna Hoag said Buller’s visit kicked off a yearlong author’s study she has planned for students this year.
“We are the William Allen White School and she writes about William Allen White so we chose her for our first book study,” Hoag said. “Fourth graders also are studying biographies right now so this was a nice tie-in.”
Hoag said many of her students did not know anything about their school’s namesake.
“They now realize that their school is named for a person, and they are pretty proud of their school.”
Buller’s presentation at all three schools included how she gathered her information and interesting stories she learned along the way. She said she was granted blanket permission from White’s family to use information from the extensive collection of White’s writings and artifacts.
Lowther librarian Kay Carl said Buller also talked about a new book she is writing about White’s daughter, Mary White.
“She was very impressed with the fifth and sixth graders and took pictures of the bulletin boards we had made for her,”
Students at all three schools prepared questions in advance for the guest author. The program also was used to promote the William Allen White Children’s Book Award, which is presented in Emporia on Oct. 10. Students from the Lowther Intermediate School serve as ambassadors for the day’s events at Emporia State University and the awards ceremony at White Auditorium.

William Allen White is credited with running the Klu Klux Klan out of Emporia and Kansas but, why did he not write an editorial on why Paul Terry was baned from playing in the state basketball tournment of 1934? Although William Allen White lent his name to many organizations, he always maintained his own personal view. He told the great international liberal reporter Walter Lippman to not let the bankers get to you. Both White and Lippman served as charter members on the Rockefeller Foundation an organization from its inception that promoted the idea of a one world government.

May I point out that the article is titled "White biographer shares stories with Emporia students" because she wrote a biography about a man with the last name White. William Allen White, the very famous editor of the very newspaper you are reading. It is not influenced by Beverley Buller's race. May I also suggest looking up the diversity and Socioeconomic Status of William Allen White Elementary to give you piece of mind as you seem to be pointing a lot of fingers towards race. We are proud of our school, our student diversity, and William Allen White's name.

It was a joke but it was even more than that. Racism was bound to be brought up as it is in every article discussion we have here on EG online because of a few posters(they know who they are). I was just beating them to the punch(fruit punch that is, I love that stuff). Sorry to offend.
