For months, the Maize Invitational has been on the collective minds of the Emporia High volleyball team. The big day finally arrives on Saturday, and the scheduling of the tournament is sure to test the Spartans’ focus.
See, Emporia has to get through its first three pool-play matches before 3:15 p.m. arrives. That’s when the Spartans will finally get what they’ve been looking forward to: an on-court showdown with their old coach, Maize’s Betsy Martling.
“We’ve been talking about it since the beginning of the summer,” EHS junior Lauren Longbine said, “since we first found out who our new coach was, and that we’d have to play in that tournament, and we’re just all looking forward to it, I guess. It’s been talked about for a long time.”
