Friday, September 18, 2009

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

THE HUMANE SOCIETY of the Flint Hills, which is offering a $10 discount to have pets spay and neutered.

• Craig Saalfeld who won two silver medals in the Deaflympics.

• Organizers and participants of The Great American Market. More than 150 vendors participated and more than 4,000 attended the event.

• The Emporia Police Department who will receive $17,200 grant for law enforcement equipment. The grant comes from the United States Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance.

• High school students Logan Ranger and Elizabeth Dieker who held a fundraiser for Mariah Serrano. They held a dance and raised $1,577.44.

• Walburns Fitness and Wellness, which also held a fundraiser for Mariah Serrano. The event, called Mariah Mania, raised $6,000 and more than 300 people participated.

• Arturo Delgado and Rafael Bringas who opened a new Mexican restaurant, El Pollo Dorado, at 312 W. 12th.

• McKenna LeClear, Alex Stone and Emily Frese who were named as semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship program.
