Free sports injury clinics; ERC activities

Free sports injury clinics

Newman Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, 1301 W. 12th Ave. Suite 105, is hosting free clinics on Saturdays for any sports injury area athletes sustain during the current sports season. The clinics run through Oct. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. each Saturday. All athletes must arrive at 10:30 a.m. in order to be examined, and will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. The screenings will not carry a charge, but if any diagnostic tests such as radiology services need to be performed, those will carry a charge. If a problem is detected, an appointment will be scheduled for the athlete to be seen during regular office hours. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

ERC activities

The Emporia Recreation Center is holding the local NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition at Santa Fe Park tonight at 7 p.m. Open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15 as of Dec. 31, 2009, with boys and girls divisions. Event will be based on distance and accuracy. Entry is free.

5K Run/Walk

Admire United Methodist Church is sponsoring a 5K run/walk scheduled for Saturday. Proceeds will be used for school supplies for Admire Elementary School.

Entry into the event is $15 and includes a T-shirt. Participants age 11 and under will be entered for free but will not receive a T-shirt. The entry deadline is Sunday.

Registration will be at Admire’s Jones Park Shelter House begining at 7:40 a.m., with a start time of 8 a.m. Breakfast will be served at the church from 7 to 10 a.m., with pancakes, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit and drinks. ESU flag football

Emporia State University Recreation Services is accepting entries for a flag football season that will run from Monday to Oct. 21. Games will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be played at the intramural fields north of Interstate 35. Participants must be students at ESU. Entry forms can be obtained at the ESU Student Recreation Center. A fee of $30 must be paid when entry forms are turned in. Deadline to enter is Friday. Champions of each division will receive a free shirt.

Recreation Services will also host a kickball tournament at the same field today beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until dark. Teams will have 9-16 players. The event is free for all Emporia State students. Sign up at the Recreation Center.

Beau Arndt

Appreciation Day

The first ever annual Beau Arndt Appreciation Day, presented by the Beau Arndt Foundation, will be held Saturday at Camp Alexander, three miles northeast of Emporia, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 18-year-old Arndt was killed in an accidental hunting shooting on Dec. 15, 2007.

The appreciation event is intended primarily for elementary school-aged children and their families. The camp’s shooting and archery ranges will be open and manned by certified instructors. Coon dog-tracking skills and waterfowl-retrieving dog demonstrations will be held throughout the day. Lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided, and prize drawings will be held.

Fall basketball league

Emporia High boys basketball coach Rick Bloomquist’s fall league will begin Oct. 1 and run throughout the month of October. All boys from preschool through eighth grade are invited to participate in order to improve their skills and have fun.

The registration deadline is Sept. 23. Registration fee of $50 includes a T-shirt uniform. Hunter education

An Internet-assisted Hunter Education course will be held Oct. 17 at Camp Alexander from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the two-part class, students will first complete an online hunter education course, then attend a selected field day and testing session. Students must answer 22 of 25 questions on the test administered at the beginning of the field day to proceed.

All-night softball tournament

White City is having an all-night coed softball tournament that will start on Sept. 26 and finish in the early afternoon Sept. 27. Cost is $100 per team, and all proceeds will benefit the third (4th of July) Celebration in White City next year. For information or to register, contact Daryl Ash at 785-561-0416. Concession stand will be open, and will have prize drawings, etc.
