Arrest made in connection with homicide

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Samuel D. Llamas, 21, of Emporia has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Omar Flores on Sept. 8.

According to a press release by Lt. Ed Owens, of the Emporia Police Department, the shooting of Flores took place shortly after 8:10 p.m. at Rodeway Inn and Suites, 3181 W. Highway 50 on Sept. 8. Flores died later at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

Owens, who is the Emporia Criminal Investigations Division commander, stated in a press release that the investigation will continue and more arrests are expected to follow.

“The members of the Emporia Police Department extended our condolences to the family of Mr. Flores during this time of loss,” said Police Chief Gary Smith. “Investigators have additional leads on several other individuals and the investigation will move forward.”

Smith said several entities are assisting with the investigation including the Lyon County Attorney’s Office, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Emporia Police Department at 343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 342-2273.

I can believe it. People sure are quick to bash the old EPD when they give celebs tickets or arrest someone they know. They do an excellent job. Maybe next time the workers could get a raise instead of the City Manager.

What celebrities has the EPD given tickets to? The last thing I heard about was when they arrested Dr. Hook for marijuana back in the 70's.

Well yeah they caught 1 person, only because they already know who all of them were since they were all working for the cops and the cops hired them to meet Omar at the motel for a drug deal gone wrong, but they didn't know that they would shoot him! so yeah good job EPD......yeah right give me a break!

catchmewhatever - maybe the LEOs *can* identify additional suspects but there is a considerable jump between "knowing" who's involved and being able to prove it in court. As for you, Cliffy. "Maybe next time the workers could get a raise instead of the City Manager." You are SO funny ! I still haven't determined what he does to justify $100k plus perks/year. Other than to guide the hicks of course.

I think that it is pretty sad that all these people are more worried about who is getting paid what and who was set up and so on when there is a grieving family that has lost someone in there family and all they want are answers to why.....Maybe people should think about how they would feel if it was their child, brother, sister, or cousin. No matter what people have gotten into or the circumstances you would still love them and stay by their side and hurt if something were to happen to them.....get over the things you are mad about and think about others!! The EPD are doing the best they can to solve this!!!! As for tickets to celebs well....it doesn't matter who you know or where you are from if you are doing something wrong you should get the same punishment...sorry!!

YOUR RIGHT NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE if you do something wrong you should be held responsable thats why IF there is any truth to the rumors the family and friends have the right to know i dont beleive the statement made that they dont operate that way ive heard of deals made set ups done waaay before this case there maybe consequences to telling the truth but its still the right thing to do.iam ALL for getting drugs off the streets i know its not easy to do put one away 50 more come out but there has to be a better way then a 25yr old loosing his life.if rumors are not true just say this is not what happened dont make a false statement "we dont operate that way" is just not a true comment in my opinion

if he was a family member of mine i would want the WHOLE truth and i know his friends want the whole truth thats what i think is making alot of people mad and the cheif worrying about rumors is just such a waste like i said before the rumors as i understand were directed at epd they know if its rumor or fact. well they should know dont you think?

I don't know if there will be complete answers for anyone until this whole investigation is over because in all honesty even if they told the family or friends exactly right now what is going on it could ruin the whole investigation because something could possibly leak out....I would hope that when the investigation is over they would know the whole truth and their will be closer for this grieving family that has lost a loved one and for all of his friends that are hurting as well.....no matter what it is a very sad deal for many that loved him and very unfair.....and I also want to add that I know some people that did love him and care for him and it is sad that I asked them about this article and they have said they didn't even know that anyone was arrested in this case before all of Emporia knew.....no one had called and told them yet!

What's not being said here in all this bleeding heart talk about how good of a guy this person was that died, is that he was a DRUG DEALER. Thats why he was there, to deal drugs. Now that is not saying that it was right that he was gunned down and especially not fair to his family left behind, but what about the families of all the people he sold drugs to and started addictions, supported gang activity, and even possibly killed because of drug abuse?

We need to face the fact that Emporia has a very serious drug problem because of its location between major drug routes and a bigger college! Even if the police are using people to get to the bigger dealers, that is a risk taken to help keep people safe and away from drugs!

The life this young man chose is why he is no longer with us and that is very sad!

friendsandfamily (anonymous) says...

How can you people make comments about what someone was or what you thought he was and in the same paragraph mention compassion for his family???????? You really need to step back and take a good look at your own family and see if everyone is perfect. And whether they are or not if you would want to be dealing with their death not to mention low comments from the community that he had lived in the majority of his life.
Everyone makes mistakes whether it is true he was that or not, however he didn't deserve to die no matter what the circumstances were.
I look to The Gazette for updates on whether anyone has been arrested where they are on the investigation, to scroll down and see that there are still as always a town full of bitter people that have nothing better to do that sit and talk crap.
Not only about Omar but the Police of Emporia as well. Do you seriously have nothing better to do than to be judgemental and to put things out there for us "his family" to see? How sad for you as well

Dude,

The Bill of Rights gave you freedom of speech to speak out against the government, a right you apparently enjoy greatly.

What the Bill of Rights did not give you is the ability to make untrue, malicious verbal or written attacks (slander and libel) or physical attacks (assualt and battery). You do not have the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. Your Rights stop at your neighbor's nose.
