Frese, LeClear, Stone earn National Merit Honors

Three area high-school students have made it through the first cut in the competition for National Merit Scholarships.
McKenna C. LeClear and Alex J. Stone of Emporia, and Emily A. Frese of Council Grove, were among 16,000 semifinalists announced in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship program.
According to information from NMS Corp., about 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain status as finalists, and approximately half of those will be among the 8,200 students who will win a National Merit Scholarship, a news release stated.
McKenna and Alex are seniors at Emporia High School; Emily is a senior at Council Grove High School.
