Free kicks, contrary to their name, were quite costly for Emporia High on Tuesday night at TRYSA — because Hayden had Aaron Rowe.
The strong-footed Rowe scored three goals off free kicks — two direct, one indirect — to lead the Wildcats to a 3-2 victory over Emporia.
A first half dominated by controversy — both teams had beefs on the goals they respectively gave up to forge a 1-1 tie at the break — gave way to a second half in which the Spartans (4-2) had their opportunities, but could only cash in on one of them. Hayden, with Rowe sending a pair of breathtaking direct free kicks past EHS goalkeeper Cory Obermeyer, got the goals it needed to escape with a win.
