The Emporia High volleyball team went 1-2 at the Seaman Quad on Tuesday, ending its night on a high note with a two-set win over Santa Fe Trail.
The Spartans started sluggishly, beginning their evening with a 25-14 first-set loss to Seaman. EHS (2-4) rebounded to win the second set 26-24 before the Vikings won the final set 25-13 to take the match. Lindy Arndt had five kills to lead Emporia, Lauren Longbine added four, and Megan McRell had eight assists. Courtney Waldner had 17 block assists, Gladys Azzun had nine and Sarah Kolmer had eight.
“We had a rough start in that first game, but we played hard, and we played a lot better than we did last week in our first games,” EHS coach Ashley Nehls said.
Mill Valley swept Emporia in its second match, 25-18, 25-23. Longbine led EHS with five kills and also had four block assists and one solo block. Arndt had four kills. McRell logged seven assists, and Bailey Sosa had three. Kolmer had two assist blocks and a solo block.
The Spartans closed their stint in the quad by beating Santa Fe Trail 25-22, 26-24. Longbine once again had five kills for Emporia, giving her 14 for the quad, and had two solo blocks and two assists blocks. Arndt added four more kills to finish with 13, as well as three solo blocks and five assist blocks. Kelly Bacon also had four kills, and Kolmer had three. McRell had 16 assists, giving her 31 over the three matches.
“I think our passes, they were pretty good tonight, and our sets were good,” Arndt said. “And what I did differently tonight was I swung through and on top of the ball more than I did last Tuesday, so that made it better. But the... sets, they were there, and they were on tonight.”
The Spartans head to Maize on Saturday for a tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
