An announcement by video rental giant Blockbuster Inc. that it will close as many as 960 stores by the end of next year will not affect Emporia’s Blockbuster.
The local Blockbuster at 737 W. 6th Ave. is a franchise, according to manager Mark Hayes, and is not affected by such decisions by Blockbuster Inc.
“Technically, we’re Major Video of Kansas,” Hayes said. “We have some of the same programs and we need their okay to do certain things, but in terms of our day-to-day operations, no, we’re not really affected by their financial issues.”
Blockbuster Inc. has struggled lately as more customers have abandoned brick-and-mortar video stores for online rentals and kiosks.
According to a report by the Associated Press, documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission show that about 18 percent of Blockbuster Inc.’s stores aren’t making money.
That doesn’t appear to be holding true for Emporia’s Blockbuster franchise.
“In fact, we’ve been doing far better lately,” Hayes said.
