Stanbrough paces Spartans again

Monday, September 14, 2009

No matter what Jenna Stanbrough and the rest of the girls field did at Saturday’s Emporia Invitational, they weren’t going to catch Avery Clifton.

Stanbrough had a solid run for Emporia High, finishing the 4K run in 16 minutes, 25.20 seconds to finish seventh. Her run led the Emporia girls to a sixth-place finish out of nine teams on a sunny, humid morning at Jones Park.

“I got out good, and got in good position,” Stanbrough said. “I think I need to work on being stronger in the middle of the race to get past people. But other than that, I think I’m happy with my performance.”

But Clifton was the show-stealer — the Washburn Rural runner’s winning time of 14:37.90 was nearly a minute-and-a-half faster than the second place finisher, Libby Reazin of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Abigail Chiroy finished in 29th place for EHS with a time of 17:35.00. Abbey Davies ran 44th with a time of 18:23.60, Joslyn Barton finished 46th with a time of 18:30.40 and Cindy Meinholdt came in 49th at 19:04.90.

The Spartan girls logged 166 team points. Manhattan scored 57 to win the meet by two over Aquinas, and Rural finished third with 76. Olathe South finished fourth, followed by Lawrence. Coming in behind the Spartans were Maize in seventh, followed by McPherson and Great Bend.

On the boys side, Tyler Tilton led the Spartans with a ninth-place finish, running the 5K course in 17:19.30.

“I started off way too fast last week (at Manhattan), and I just died towards the end,” Tilton said. “This week, I started off at a better pace, and I felt better the whole rest of the race.”

The Spartan boys finished in eighth place out of 11 squads, scoring 211 points. Drew Detwiler finished 34th for EHS, posting a time of 18:22.20. Matt Fry ran the course in 18:42 to finish 39th. Donnie Tennal finished 58th with a time of 19:38.00, Chase Sanchez finished 71st with a run of 20:41.90 and Brandon Charbonneau finished 74th with a time of 21:34.30.

Lawrence and Washburn Rural tied for first in the boys team race with 65 points apiece. Manhattan was third, followed by Campus, Aquinas, McPherson and Wichita Northwest. Finishing behind Emporia were Olathe South, Maize and Great Bend.
