The third-ranked Emporia State volleyball team beat Edinboro 3-1 on Saturday in the Peggy Martin Challenge in Warrensburg, Mo.
The Hornets struggled hitting the ball, but had 11 blocks on their way to a 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21 victory.
Arica Shepard led the way with her third straight double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Brittney Miller finished with 13 kills and was the only other Hornet in double-figures.
Freshmen middle hitters Nicole Gingery and Caitlyn Murray led the Hornets in blocks, filling in for injured middle hitters Brianne Boner and Katelyn Kaiser. Gingery finished with nine kills and five blocks, while Murray finished the match with eight kills and six blocks.
Ting Liu added 45 assists to seven digs and two blocks. Jenna Snook had a match-high three service aces for ESU.
The Hornets will start MIAA play on Wednesday when they travel to No. 21 Truman. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve from Kirksville, Mo.
