Facing a field with some strong teams at its home invitational on Saturday, Emporia High’s tennis team finished fourth out of five squads with a 6-10 record for the day.
“We looked better (Saturday) then we’ve played our previous two meets, and that’s what we’re looking for right now,” EHS coach Melinda Flohr said.
At. No. 1 singles, Chloe Blake defeated Topeka High’s TaQuva Canedy 8-6. She then lost to Lawrence’s Taylor Eubanks by an 8-0 score, to Maize’s Katie Klausmeyer 8-1 and to St. Thomas Aquinas’ Natalie Looney 8-0.
Noelle Waters scored two victories in the No. 2 singles spot. She beat Topeka High’s Anne Mahoney 8-0 and and Maize’s Adrianne Adams 8-2. Waters dropped matches to Lawrence’s Morgan Manger 8-2 and Aquinas’ Lauren Lovetro 8-4.
The Spartans’ No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlin Gile and Nancy Delgado went 2-2 on Saturday. Gile/Delgado beat Topeka High’s Aileen Pabst/Allison Christian 8-0 and defeated Maize’s team of Ellie Cary/Alli O’Rourke by an 8-3 final. The Spartan squad lost to Lawrence’s Elizabeth Simons/Jordan Payne 8-2 and to Aquinas’ Becca Fowler/Natalie Bunker 8-3.
Natalie Juarez and Brooke Gutierrez went 1-3 for the Spartans at No. 2 singles. The pair earned an 8-3 win over Topeka High’s Nicole Montage/Chrissey Christason. Juarez/Gutierrez lost to Lawrence’s Bailey Frei/Kehinde Hameed 8-4, to Maize’s team of Courtney Barger/Bailey Spencer 8-3, and to Aquinas’ squad of Maggie Turek/Shannon Shoeman 8-4.
The meet was ranked by straight won-loss record for each team. Lawrence finished 14-2 to win the event. Aquinas, last year’s Class 5A State champion, finished a game back at 13-3.
“So we definitely got to see some good competition,” Flohr said.
Maize posted a 7-9 mark to finish third. Topeka High brought up the rear in the standings, losing all 16 of its matches.
The Spartans will next be in action Thursday when they travel to the Derby Invitational.
