Education is key to first Beau Arndt Day

Monday, September 14, 2009

The First Annual Beau Arndt Outdoor Appreciation Day will be held this weekend with activities for kids and adults alike.

Arndt died in December 2007 when a man hunting from the roadway shot into a pasture, hitting the young man as he lay in a hunting blind on property northwest of Americus. The Outdoor Appreciation Day is set to provide fun and educate kids on the outdoors and hunting. There will be activities, free food and prizes throughout the day.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Camp Alexander. Lunch will be provided.

The Beau Arndt Foundation was awarded a $3,500 grant from the Topeka-based Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation. The money granted to the foundation is helping to fund Saturday’s Beau Arndt Outdoor Appreciation Day.

“The Beau Arndt Outdoor Appreciation Day focuses on elementary-aged children and their families, promoting outdoor activities and outdoor safety for the enjoyment of all,” Christine Arndt said in a press release.

Christine Arndt said her son loved the outdoors and had a passion for sharing the outdoors with others.

“The Outdoor Appreciation Day is one of the ways the Beau Arndt Foundation has of continuing Beau’s passion and the Foundation’s mission of ‘helping children enjoy the outdoors safely.’”

Activities include:

• Doug Upshaw & Co. will present about coon hunting.

• Ducks Unlimited will do water dog demonstrations.

• Emporia Zoo will focus on wildlife care.

• Hunt for Hunger will give fishing tips and have contests.

• Kansas Wildlife and Parks will have a laser shot and jet ski simulator.

• The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will educate about gun safety and property laws.

• Quail Unlimited will talk about hunter safety and archery.

• The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will give a presentation on antler spotting.
