It wasn’t the prettiest win, but Olpe will take a 27-6 victory over Osage City on the road. The Eagles proved dominant on the ground as they accumulated 338 yards rushing on the night.
“I thought we controlled the line on both fronts, offensive and defensive,” coach Chris Schmidt said. “I thought we moved the ball well for the most part. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and had trouble finding the end zone.”
Olpe struck first in the opening quarter when Tyson Pettyjohn ran for a one-yard touchdown run. The Eagles later got an 8-yard TD run from Bradley Argabright and one- and two-yard scoring runs from Linden Stueve.
But the game would be up to the Olpe defense, as they held Osage City to just 194 yards of total offense and All-Flint Hills League running back Jordan Tice to only 126 yards rushing, most of which came late in the fourth quarter on two big runs.
“I thought we did an outstanding job on defense, we really controlled the line well,” Schmidt said. “We really concentrated on Tice, we knew he was going to get the ball, and I thought we did a good job of containing him. Most of his yards came on two big plays in the fourth quarter. I thought we did a good job of corralling him.”
Olpe is 2-0 on the season and will be at home to face Baxter Springs next week.

Madison 29, Flinthills 0
What do you do when a brand new quarterback is making his first varsity start in the second game of the season? For Madison, the answer was easy: don’t give up any points on defense, and create 27 points on offense.
“I thought Collin Kile did a great job tonight, and my hat goes off to him,” coach Fred McClain said of the sophomore quarterback, who was filling in for Henry Ott. “I also think we got a good effort from our fullbacks, Zach Nowell and Kole Schankie.”
The Bulldogs struck early with 6:56 remaining to take a 6-0 lead on a one-yard run by Nowell. The two-point conversion pass from Kile to Zach Fox gave them an 8-0 advantage.
Then it was time for the defense to work, as both the Madison and Flinthills offenses sputtered through the remainder of the first half. Keeping the Mustangs at bay is certainly no easy task, as they return Garrett Breech, who rushed for nearly 2,000 yards last season.
Breech did finish with 90 yards on the ground, but the Madison defense held the Flinthills offense to only 121 total yards. They held them to only six first downs and did not allow a completed pass in five attempts.

The Lebo offense was out in full force on Friday night in Melvern, as they lit things up on the ground, rushing for 354 yards. Devon Johnston led the Wolves with 159 yards.
Cole Brockelman added 141 yards rushing on the night. Lebo also got things done through the air, with 9-for-12 passing for 98 yards.
Johnston got the night started with a 48-yard touchdown run. That was followed by a Cole Brockelman six-yard touchdown that would be all the points the Wolves would need.
They also got things done defensively, as they held the Trojans to only 169 yards of total offense. They also allowed only one MdCV touchdown.
The Wolves will put their 2-0 record on the line when they host Waverly next week.

Hartford 40, Burlingame 28
Playing without a full complement of players on defense, the Hartford Jaguars stepped up on defense to win.
“We had three kids out with injuries, one kid who didn’t make it to school, and our defensive end went out during the game,” coach Patrick Gardner said. “All that said, I was very impressed with how we played on defense tonight. I think our defense did a great job of saving us.”
The Jaguars took advantage of a punt return for a touchdown by Chris Schwinghamer, as well as picking off two passes and recovering three fumbles.
“Our defense really saves us tonight, we got that punt return for a touchdown,” Gardner said. “And we did a really good job of giving our offense good field position all night.”
Three different Jaguars scored offensive touchdowns. Adam Ewy, had two rushing touchdowns, and the Jags got two receiving touchdowns from Colten Barrett, who also rushed for a touchdown.
