Emporia to kick off bridal show season

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Emporia will be the site of the first bridal expo in Kansas in January.

The Granada Bridal Show will be the first 2010 bridal show in the state of Kansas and will be co-sponsored by Emporia Main Street and The Granada Theatre. Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods said the expo is a good opportunity for local businesses to showcase their wedding offerings from photography and flowers to wedding cakes and attire.

Emporia is in a central location as well, said Jessica Buchholz, executive director of the Emporia Granada Theatre.

“It’s a good spot for brides to travel to,” Buchholz said.

A lot of couples get engaged over Christmas and New Year’s, Woods said, so Emporia’s show will hit that wave early.

“People who take part in this will get first crack at that market,” Woods said.

The expo will feature a fashion show, vendor booths, door prizes and a grand prize at the end of the expo. The price for tickets to the show has not been determined but will be less than $10 a person.

An informational meeting for potential vendors and those wanting more information about the expo will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Granada Theatre, where the expo will be held in January. Booth space will be first-come, first-serve, and space is limited. For more information on how to become a vendor call Woods at 340-6430 or Buchholz at 342-3342.

Oh my dear Gussie. Who needs the Comedy Channel after reading about this? This is situational irony at its best. Just rich!!!

This event was planned months ago, it didn't just happen.

This is an opportunity to bring in a lot of out of town visitors to Emporia, who will buy lunch/ dinner, vendors who may rent rooms, and overall spend some much needed dollars in Emporia. It is also a GREAT way to show off the Granada.

A lot better idea than a visitors center or a $20.00 Tuesday promotion, don't you think?

To the Emporia community who refuses to look past the facts, please realize that Casey Woods had nothing to do with the problems at Madelynns. Being a manager is not the same as an owner. If you can not open your eyes and realize what an amazing opportunity this could be for our community, I feel sorry for you. This community would be much more successful if it wasn't so determined to ostracize its own business owners and organizers. Casey Woods is an unbelievable asset to this community. If you think you could do a better job, why didn't you apply for it? Try encouraging your city to be more recognized throughout the state, with the current state of the economy we need all the help we can get.

I have to admit I find this ironic and a little humorous. I don't think that Casey had anything to do with the demise of his mother's business. It could be a very good thing for Emporia and hopefully we can showcase our florists, photographers and cake decorators. It is a shame however that we now do not have a prime wedding store in town to really, fully take advantage of having the show in Emporia. And by take advantage, I mean to provide good service and benefit the community as a whole, not as individual gain.

My question is, Who will do the fashion show? We do not have a Bridal (wedding Dress) shop any more and It Would not be right to bring in an Out of Town Store if we are trying to promote Emporia.. That is kind of a No Brainer..For if an out of town Shop comes to do the fashion show, they will continue to shop out of town..Casey, open your eyes and face reality..it may hurt, but quit hiding..The issue of the Taxes came up last year during election and it was well known then, Life goes on, but easier when you face the mistakes and carry on! I agree, let the florist and others benifit the best they can.. P.S. Have Heard lots of good about Designs by Sharon taking over the Tuxedo's (which she already provided) but has done an outstanding job of stepping in and helping the Bride and Groom (I was just in a wedding they got the tuxes from her that were at Madelynns and she was awsome) Great Job, Sharon and Staff........

Look at it another way Stevo,

If say, David's Bridal was in the show they wouldn't be a local merchant but they would make a bridal show worthwhile for the other local merchants. And it would be good for Emporia's economy because, say 100 brides, with their friends or families or grooms in tow, would be spending their day and money in Emporia just to attend the bridal Show. And who knows, maybe there will be a bridal store in Emporia by then. Just trying a positive spin for a change.
