Kim Douglas, assistant manager of Dairy Queen of Emporia, has been recognized as being a “valued employee” on the occasion of her 10th anniversary, stated the news release. She also works in the funds management department at ESB Financial.
Startups
A Starting a Business Workshop will be offered by the Kansas Small Business Development Center at Emporia State University.
The workshop, from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Lyon County extension meeting room, 2632 W. Highway 50, will offer information about marketing, management and money to help attendees evaluate the feasability of their ideas and start writing business plans.
Pre-registration for the free workshop is due by Sept. 23. Call the small business center at 341-5308.
Business gathering
Re/Max Select Realtors will be the site of a Business After Hours sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau.
Reservations are required for the gathering, from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Re/Max office, 116 W. 12th Ave. Call the chamber office, 342-1600, or complete online registration at www.emporiakschamber.org. The form is in the Community Calendar section.
The deadline for reservations is Sept. 22.

An old timer friend of mine told me that right out of college he was hired by the Kansas City Star but, a friend of his, had to settle for flipping hambergers at McDonalds. At the ten year reunion, he found out that his friend was well on the way to becoming a millionaire as he was awarded a huge franchise. For anyone that wants to be self employed, I say,"shoot for the stars and if you miss and hit the top of the mountian, that's not bad."
