Ride Into History
Ride Into History performer Joyce Thierer will represent ESU at the State Fair today and then goes to Mead, Dodge City and Protection to lead KHC book talks, “Dancing at the Rascal Fair,” over the weekend. Performer Ann Birney leads a KHC discusson about “Letters of a Woman Homesteader” at 2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Butler Community College.
In Abilene, Thierer will portray Rosa and perform “Cattle Tales at 2 p.m. Sept. 20, both at the Eisenhower Center. On Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. Birney will portray Amelia Earhart at the John Brown Historic Site in Osawatomie.
The Admire Fall Festival is Sept. 19 and at 11 a.m. Thad Beach, a full-time entertainer, musician, songwriter, storyteller and teaching artist, will help young people write and sing a song about Admire’s history and lore. Thierer’s book, “Telling History: A Manual for Performers and Presenters of First Person Narratives,” will be available at the end of September. Beach will perform at the Admire school at 10 a.m. Sept. 18.
Former Emporians
“Celebration in Song” featuring the music of Bette Midler and Barry Manilow, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lewis and Shirley White Theater at the Jewish Community Center, 5801 W. 115th St., in Overland Park.
Featured performers are former Emporians Kristi Mitchell and Cary Mock. Mitchell and Mock have been friends since 1988 when they performed together in summer stock in Emporia. Mitchell grew up in Emporia and Mock attended Emporia State University. Mitchell lives in Olathe and teaches music at the Barstow School. She also has worked as a conductor and director and was music director at The Barn Players of Johnson County and Bell Road Barn Players of Kansas City.
Mock taught music in Abilene and performed and directed at the Great Plains Theatre in Abilene for several years before he moved to Prairie Village four years ago. He also has been a music director and composer and arranger. He gives private voice and piano lessons in his home.
Mitchell and Mock haveperformed several times in Kansas City area theaters and the Jewish Community Center. Tickets are $13 for members of the Center, $19 for non-members and $10 for students.
Walnut Valley

Angel collectors
The Angel Collectors Club of America will meet in Topeka Sept. 18-20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, with early activities to begin Sept. 17. The convention theme is “Angels over Topeka, Follow the Yellow Brick Road.” Members may participate in a “Red Shoe” parade with prizes awarded for the “most amazing shoes,” stated the news release. On Saturday evening there will be an “Emerald City” gala, social and dinner along with musical entertainment and guest speakers. There will be a live auction Saturday evening of an original angel watercolor, donated by by Ann Rothan, artist and children’s book illustrator.
