Pats on the Back

Friday, September 11, 2009

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

ROBERT SWANSON, who recently was promoted to vice chairman of Hartsook Companies of Wichita. Swanson, who has held a key leadership role with Hartsook Companies since he joined the firm in 1988, most recently served as president. He has provided fundraising counsel to many local non-profit organizations.

• Mark Kolmer and the Emporia Spartan football team. Kolmer helped push the Spartans to a win Friday night over Topeka High by rushing 234 yards in 32 carries. The Spartans won the game 40-21.

• The ESU volleyball team, which swept Tarleton State 3-0 at the MSU Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas on Saturday. Brianne Boner and Ting Liu both earned MIAA player of the week honors for last week.

• All who have donated to the Emporia Arts Council to help push it to its goal of raising $62,000 by the end of the month — a challenge set forth by an anonymous donor who pledged $75,000 if the goal is reached. The EAC is currently halfway to reaching its goal.

• The Emporia High soccer team, which on Monday remained undefeated after defeating Wichita East 1-0 at the Titan Classic in Wichita. The team is now 3-0 on the season.

• ESU professor Jim Hoy, who has been chosen to receive the 2009 Don Coldsmith Literary Award during the Sunflower State Book Festival on Oct. 10 in Osborne. Hoy will be the first recipient of the award, which is named after author Don Coldsmith, who died in June. The award was established to pay tribute to distinguished Kansas authors.

I'd like to see a pat on the back for Janice Romeiser, Eleanor Browning and all the others who have spent the last couple of years cutting fabric, sewing and stuffing bunnies, and assembling and delivering packets of info for new parents on the importance of reading to infants as a means to facilitate the development of critical language-processing pathways. Seems to me hitting the 1000th Bunny mark deserves a POTB.

And - according to Thursday's paper, the Arts Council was more than 2/3 of the way to the goal. Is my math wrong ($41K/$62K) or did someone want their money back?

Has the Emporia Arts Council publicly committed to using only Emporia contractors and only materials sold by Emporia businesses for their new building?

I agree Tracey! All of those involved in the Reading program for new parents involve a huge pat on the back! What an asset they are to our community!
