EHS title banners headed to eBay

Thursday, September 10, 2009

This weekend will be Emporia High fans’ first chance to grab some unique pieces of Spartan athletic history.

Beginning Saturday, EHS will use the auction Web site eBay to auction off old championship banners that were replaced in the school’s gym last year. The 50 banners are separated into groups of four, and each group of banners will be advertised at one Spartan football home game. The day after the game, the six-day online auction period for that group of banners will begin.

To read complete story see the print edition or the online print edition.

I don't think they should put the banners up for auction. That's a piece of our schools history and what we've accomplished. We should be proud of those banners and keep them up in the gym to remind us of how far we've come!

I agree with mysteriousgirl23. But I guess times change just like our traditional proud Spartan logo has changed into a Spartan thug image. Strange.

pbpw,

Yes, the image of the Spartan logo has changed into a more of a pop culture image. But of course it's going to change through out the years. I mean, its just redundent that the school wants to give away the HISTORY OF OUR BANNERS TO EBAY. Why would they do that? Hell if I know. Its just ridiculous if you ask me.

The trouble with just putting up part of a story is that you only get part of the story. According to the rest of the article that was in the paper, these banners are getting replaced with newer ones. I don't know what they will get out of them but if they didn't sell them, the old banners would just sit around somewhere collecting dust.

Shouldn't some go to the history museum? Take those, perhaps some pictures if there are any and someone who was either there, or the articles about them and let them have a new exhibit.

beth,
That's what I was thinking. They will put new banners up that contain the old championship information. The old banners were probably just getting a bit crusty and they needed to make room for new (nicer looking) championship banners. At least this way, they'll make some money to fund future championships. It’s not like they’re selling the trophies or anything. The banners are just a way of saying, “Look how great we were/are”. They have no historical value. Besides, if you don't approve of the sale, you have a chance to buy them and you can do whatever you want with them.
Here are a few ideas if you happen to place the winning bid… Placemats, garage/oil rags, disposable diapers, cat box liners, bathroom mats, small grill covers, toilet tissue, kindling, etc…
