Support sags

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

POLLS SHOW WANING support for health care reform. While more than 60 percent favored re-form following President Barack Obama’s election. That support has shrunk to a little over 50 percent, pollsters report.

That huge change came about because critics have raised fears that the president’s plan was too expensive and might cause more harm than good.

The key words are fear and doubt.

Health care now consumes about 17 percent of the nation’s gross national product — more than one out of every seven dollars spent in our economy. Changing the system would affect every man, woman and child in the country to some degree.

It is not surprising that a majority of Americans have grown very nervous at the prospect of such a nation-changing reform; a nervousness made even more wrenching by the worst worldwide recession in 50 years.

Opposition to reform also grows from the fact that about 84 percent of U.S. households have health insurance that covers ordinary needs. Those lucky enough to have coverage that has proved adequate for their own family health ex-penses lack a personal sense of urgency on the issue.

The 16 percent who are uninsured are unorganized and have no political voice.

The under-insured, a much larger group, are largely unaware of their exposure to financial disaster growing from a major illness or serious injury.

Those who do get overwhelmed by massive medical costs, such as Cody Wools and his family in Humboldt, are too few in numbers to carry much weight in the national health care conversation.

Facing these facts, President Obama and his supporters are reduced to logical arguments that may not drive folks to action.

It is true that the United States spends almost twice as much on health care as does any other nation without creating better health outcomes; it is true that health care costs continue to rise faster than inflation and threaten to overwhelm the federal budget within a few years; it is true that the Medicare program itself faces bankruptcy in 2017 unless costs are reined in; but it is not true that these facts drive the average American to demand Congressional action.

That’s the challenge that faces the president as he prepares to address a joint session of Congress — and the American people — today.

The ball is in President Obama's court to reach out to Republicans if he wants a bipartisan bill on healthcare reform, House GOP Leader John Boehner (Ohio) said Monday morning.

Boehner told reporters that the president has not invited House GOP leaders to the White House for meetings on healthcare reform since the end of April.

Earlier this year, GOP leaders sent a letter to the president in May stating that they would like to work with the administration to find "common ground" on healthcare reform.

But the administration responded with a tersely worded letter indicating that they had healthcare reform under control.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Perhaps if the administration were truly interested in reforming the system rather than growing government more support would be forthcoming.

Start with tort reform.

Affordable health insurance availability.

Clean-out the Drug Company lobbyists from Congress.

Until the stench of corruption is removed from Washington DC, further governmental mandates are pointless, and additional burden on Joe the Plumber.

Hi Open eyes;

It is Observer not Observation.

It makes no difference whether it is the Republicrats of Democans, until the Congress gets off the Lobbyist "hog trough", no change can happen.

The insurance companies, medical corporations, etc. hold sway. They can mandate huge government expenditures, and legislate mandatory corporate health insurance till the cows come home, but if they don't clean-up the system, the result will be restricted access, reduction in geriatrics and neo-natal, and a larger percentage of the population being penalized.

Obama is smooth and can sell freezers to the Eskimos, but if they don't clean-up their house the foundation of Obamacare is sheer corruption.

Rep. Frank Kratovil Jr. (D-MD):

Opposes current legislation in the House, but remains open to public option. He opposes the measure currently under consideration in the House and will vote against it unless there are significant changes. Among his objections: the price, which would add $239 billion to the deficit over 10 years, according to a preliminary estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. He's also concerned, he says, that the measure is too generous to the poor, at the expense of the middle class, and potentially harmful to rural areas of Maryland, like the Eastern Shore, which already have trouble attracting and keeping doctors. At the same time, Kratovil speaks with evident passion about the need for change. He said in an interview that he "absolutely" would support a more "reasonable" plan, though he acknowledges that he doesn't know how to close the cost gap. Unlike many of his fellow Blue Dogs, he's not against including a public insurance option. He said he would favor one that creates an "equal playing field" and legitimate competition with private insurance companies. "I don't follow the fear that having a public option means the beginning of a single-payer system," he said, sitting in a windowless conference room at his Salisbury district office. (Paul West, “A Blue Dog Democrat's View From The Middle,” The Baltimore Sun, 8/23/09)

Rep. Jim Marshall (D-GA):

“As the Bill Stands Right Now, I Would Have to Vote ‘No.’” "As the bill stands right now, I would have to vote 'no' until we get a better handle on the costs. I am adamantly opposed to throwing more money at the current system." http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main...

Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY):

“But I Will Not Vote For A Bill That Gets It Wrong, And If I Had To Vote Today For The Current Piece Of Legislation In Front Of Congress, I Would Not Be Able To Support It.”“U.S. Rep. Eric Massa said if he had to vote today on America's Affordable Health Care Choices Act, he would probably vote against it. ‘We all know that one in six don't have health insurance. We all know that we pay more per capita for health care than any other nation in the world. These things need to be addressed, and doing nothing, which is what so many want to do, is simply not an option,’ said Massa, D-Corning. ‘But I will not vote for a bill that gets it wrong, and if I had to vote today for the current piece of legislation in front of Congress, I would not be able to support it,’ he said Tuesday during his weekly teleconference with the media.” (Ray Finger, “Massa Wary Of Health Care Reform Bill,” Star-Gazette, 7/22/09)

Sorry, Observer - my oversight.

Speaking of lobbyists, maybe this is why we don't get tort reform:

In 2008, of 154 House or Senate candidates who received $10,000 or more directly from AAJ (American Association for Justice, formerly named the Association of Trial Lawyers of America), 149 were Democrats and only five were Republican. In 2006, only five of 191 were Republican. In 2004, only six of 137 were Republican, with the rest, again, all Democrats.
(The five Republican recipients of $10,000 each from AAJ in 2008 were Reps. Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Bill Posey of Florida, Timothy V. Johnson of Illinois, and Lee Terry of Nebraska, along with Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho.)

The Census Bureau reports that the number of people lacking health insurance rose to 46.3 million in 2008.

That's up from 45.7 million in 2007, due to a continuing erosion of employer-provided insurance. Still, the level remained just below the peak of 47 million who were uninsured in 2006, because of the growth of government insurance programs such as Medicaid for the poor.

That's the law. Clearly stated.

Mayor Gavin Newsom vowed Sunday to maintain San Francisco as a sanctuary for immigrants and do everything he can to discourage federal authorities from conducting immigration raids.
The mayor cannot stop federal authorities from making arrests, Newsom told about 300 mostly Latino members of St. Peter's Church and other religious groups supporting immigrants. But no San Francisco employee will help with immigration enforcement.

"I will not allow any of my department heads or anyone associated with this city to cooperate in any way shape or form with these raids," Newsom declared. "We are a sanctuary city, make no mistake about it."

The Board of Supervisors first declared San Francisco a "sanctuary city" in 1989.

Brian, afraid there are so many holes in what you have stated. Concerning your reference to " Pres.Bush2005 and the Iraqui Constitution", one must consider the Iraquis religious beliefs and their body. I believe it is known they have total lack of consideration for such, cutting hands, arms etc off as punishment. Also, in reading what you posted and the Iraqi Constitution believe it stated "special provisions for children, the elderly, and the handicapped." Where are WOMEN considered??? They aren't! World wide it is known what they do to young girls and or women in order to keep them as what is perceived as under "control". I believe those that wrote this KNEW what they were doing and TRYING to abide by the "law of the land" and not affend BUT give these people some hope. Brian, can you tell me, what percent of the people actually use the "medical" care?

Concerning in Emporia, Ks. I went to a meeting last evening concerning Medical care here and the cost. When the Speaker was asked "what percent of those uninsured were illegal aliens"? A answer wasn't given, just didn't know. What percent of the uninsured went to the "emergency room"(where cost is higher) then through their doctor,(not an emergency) couldn't answer. When asked "What percent of the cost was for duplicate procedures" couldn't answer. Yes, we need "reform" but do we need to replace with governement ran, NO!!!

Yes, goodoleboy, the bill IS clear on the matter, but verification is another thing. I can stand outside a bar underneath a sign that states that nobody, absolutely NOBODY under 18 will be allowed inside, but that does absolutely no good whatsoever if I either 1) Don't check anyone's id at all, or 2) accept any fake id regardless of how obvious a forgery it is. Anyone can go get a fake id or ssn card.

Question straight for the Dems on the committee: WHY exactly are you SO DANG against adding any verification? What do you have to gain or lose by saying, ok, you can show me a social security number, but I'm going to go online and use E-verify to prove that number is valid, and not 1) fake 2) belonging to a dead person somewhere, or 3) belonging to some 80-year old woman somewhere and you are a 22-year old male claiming it is your number. WHY are you against that? Unless......... you have a hidden agenda to push thru, either now, or further down the line. The standard excuse being used is "what we have now is good enough".

Really?

"The standard excuse being used is "what we have now is good enough".

Really?"

No, what we have now is not good enough, Dems and Rep know this, and the president is looking hard at reform on this matter next year. It is my belief that Immigration reform will make or break Obama. Health care is reform is needed now, as is immigration reform. I am thankful for one thing with this administration, that they are tackling these issues, they need to be addressed.

goodloleboy, I believe open_eyes is REFERRING to medical reform. If we start checking out "legall" status (that REFERS to all!() and stop giving illigals FREE medical, social security, food stamps etc., the cost WOULD go down.

What truly amazes me, we are ever so glad NOT to question the status of ILLIGALS but are so eargerly questioning the"benefits" our military, what they receive, pay etc. These young women and men ARE serving OUR nation!!!! Do you realize that in todays military, you MUST pay for your uniforms? When I was in a NUMBER of years ago, they were "issued" to us as part of our so called "benefits". Check the pay that we give OUR military compared to what an illigal will be able to receive. I have friends that are disabled from the
Vietnam period, they CONTINUALLY cut their benefits. THEY WERE SERVING OUR NATION!!!! We, as a nation "PLACED" THEM IN THE "LIine of Fire"!!! What is wrong with this picture????? At one time the military could have medical care for spouses/children,not anymore!!!! They MUST pay!!!!!!

Boy! Goodoleboy!!! you set this girl off!!!! There is so much that COULD be done to correct the medcial situation WITHOUT giving it to the government, who in honesty, can't tie their shoes without help!!!!! And yes, I AM referring to the health care bill. If we're supposed to wait and see what is in the final bill before we say anything, then lets all just turn off the TV and radio and keep our mouths shut until it gets shoved down our throat. And then nobody will have any right to complain. Yeah, lets just all stand by quietly why they shove everything else down our throat without questioning it one whit until its too late. Right. Now there's a brilliant idea. I am, as plain as day in my earlier posts, directly asking why 2 amendments to add verification have been rejected. And nobody can give a good answer why. They are debating and adding/subtracting things to the bill on a daily basis. Its part of the process. Verification is something the American people want. Why is it being rejected? And along straight party lines at that?

But then again, Republicans booed Clinton, and so on...... so both sides are just as guilty as the other...."

Uhhh, no one went as far as he did, hissing and groaning has been around for a long time, yelling out "You Lie" during a presidential speech in a formal setting is new territory, and I'm having a hard time finding people on the right defending his actions. He was way out of line, and a prime example of what happens to people that let their emotions cloud their judgment, they often do stupid things that they regret later. But if your into apologies then by all means, carry on....

"goodoleboy, you went and DID it again!!!! "let's not let our emotions rule us!" We ARE speaking of OUR country and the ill affects that socialized medicine would have on it and the various "causes" of such!!!!"

Yeah, lets just blurt out whatever comes to mind and have zero respect for diplomacy. Having strong feelings and emotions on topics is a good thing, but having a passion for something is one, losing control of yourself is another. What is that old saying? "God gave you a brain for reason"...

""Emotions" ARE a MAJOR part of us and as a nation, help make us who we are. Did those writing our constitution not show the emotions they held? Freedom from being "ruled"? Yes, we are under "fire" and we BETTER react!!!"

And from what I read when they sat down to write said constitution they did it in a diplomatic fashion in accordance to respect of the time, hence they were not raving idiots spouting out whatever came to mind. Rep Wilson is lucky he didn't pull that stunt back then, he could be dueling with a chance at losing his life, but alas these days we can just say we are sorry, or blame something else and carry on as if everything is just dandy.

Or maybe it hasn't been fact-checked enough:

http://legalinsurrection.blogspot.com...

I will respectfully keep my right to complain and bellyache during the entire process when things are being considered and voted on that I am against. I do not agree that we are "out of the loop" until the next election. Many a change has come about because of letter writing campaigns to representatives, protests, and public opinion. To think that there is absolutely nothing we can do until another election misses a big part of what we have in America. Of course they can ram whatever they want thru - unless they get worried about their re-election chances. (Tell me what politician isn't). Sure, there are quite a few that do things counter to what their constituents think. And there are quite a few that change and bow to public pressure from their constituents. Ideas get floated around and changed often because of exactly that - public outcry, pressure, and sentiment.
I, for one, won't sit by on my thumbs and whine that there's nothing I can do till the next election. Whether my elected representative chooses to listen to me or ignore me, that is up to him, and he/she can take their chances at the next election, but it won't be because I just threw my hands up in the air and quit.

goodoleboy, what part of the below paragraph was escaped you?

"Well, I did not approve of the Congressman shouting out at the President's speech. There is a time and a place for everything - and I think during the speech respect should be shown. The congressman can go on the news afterwards and explain the lies. I don't want to see yelling and shoving matches on our congressional floor like we've seen in some other countries in the past few years."

But the remainder was pointing out this isn't the first time disrespect has been shown by members of Congress (within the chambers). Besides, there wasn't just booing and hissing during the Bush address. There were plainly people saying things, if you listen. You just couldn't make it all out because there were more people making noise with all the other "booing and hissing", unlike the near silence when the Rep yelled out liar. But I could plainly hear there were words being said that were not just boos and hisses.

Again until we see what Obama has in store, or what actual bill is chosen for the framework all the fact checking in the world won't matter. From your article:

"Just who is lying, though, depends upon which plan is being used to determine if illegal aliens are covered."

Thus why I wait to pass judgment until I see exactly where they are going, because as of now it's anyone's guess which bill gets backed.

True, but my point is we elect officials to represent our views, once elected they hold our power, we can write letters and talk until we are blue in the face but my point is with our votes we pass the power to our elected officials to represent us. There have been many times an elected official has went against their constituency and still gained reelection. So yes, if they choose to take us out of the loop they can, it could preclude them from reelection but my point is valid, which is why I consider voting and being informed of your choices is so important.

goodoleboy, I completely understand and agree with your last post, as you say, we both are right. Sometimes we are ignored, sometimes we are not. But as I said, I will respectfully continue to write and talk until I am "blue in the face". I won't stop just because I "might" be ignored. The only thing I know for 100% certainty is that if I do NOTHING, I can guarantee you I WILL be ignored.

goodoleboy, you pointed out concerning my statement on "Emotions", which I STAND by. Now, can't "emotions" be "verbal"(quiet or loud) and also "a gut" feeling? In NO way am I stating that what Mr. Wilson did IS correct, it wasn't, but we can feel STRONGLY concerning a topic, displaying our emotions by spoken or written word WITHOUT fighting, can't we?.

If we sit back and do "nothing", WHAT is that going to achieve? NOTHING! Do you want us to wait "after the fact", when it is too late?????? Isn't that like waiting for the "atom" to be invented and when it is, we say "Oh! I never thought possible!". Sorry, Goodoleboy, but I truly feel we are being lead down a dark and dreary path and I'm scared!!!!

Yes, there are areas in "medical reform" that need "fixed" BUT are we willing to allow government to dictate and take control of that part of our life? I say, "NO". Let's "fix" what is broken but not necessarily "replace". We TRULY have the best "system" in the WORLD!

What truly amazes me, you can go into sports without anything but a HS education but yet sign-on for MILLIONS and the people say "YES"! But in "Medicine", where you must have a VAST amount of education with the knowledge you will maintain and continue thru out your service that or greater education, the people say "No". Just who/what are we trying to achieve with government controlled "medical service"? One less payment for the consumer?????? Regardless of service???????????????

No insurance??? Not sure where you get free, someone pays, we as tax payers!!!! That is one reason "cost" has gone up, so many want "free!"

Private Insurance???? Not sure where you got this, but whenever I've needed my insurance they've paid the 80
percent per agreement when I took out the policy and 100% on some. Maybe you need to check your policy that you agreed upon.

DeGaul had us close our military bases and bring our military home INCLUDING many of our war dead. Total "appreciation", RIGHT????????????? Been to France once and do not have the desire to return, RUDE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aND we had an English guide who spoke PERFECT french!!!!

From the urban dictionary:

1. you can't have your cake and eat it too

This phrase is easier to understand if it is read as "You can't eat your cake, and have it too". Obviously once you've eaten your cake, you won't have it any more. Used for expressing the impossibility of having something both ways, if those two ways conflict.
He works so hard to pay for that fancy house of his that he never has any time to stay home and enjoy it.

Yeah, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

2. You can't have your cake and eat it too
something that is bittersweet.
getting a good half and a bad half to something.
John: So Tom did u get that English class you wanted?

Tom: Yea man. I love it. However the teacher is a total bitch!

John: Yea, well you can't have your cake and eat it too.

3. You can't have your cake and eat it too
An expression basically meaning that you can only have it so good, and you can't have it all.

An good example is if a situation is bittersweet.
Sara was sad that the guy whom had gotten very close to her in the past 3 years which she held a secret fondness for developed an interest in her best friend, Clare. In conversation with Clare, Sara explained the situation, to which Clare responded.

"You can't have your cake and eat it too."

4. You can't have your cake and eat it too
you cant enjoy what is yours. you can work or you can enjoy.

example:
you work really hard and finish a report, someone else takes credit.

or

you enjoy fishing and eating fish, you catch a fish, but your wife eats it.

she says "You can't have your cake and eat it too"
