Shooting victim identified

Victim in critical condition

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

The man shot around at Rodeway Inn and Suites, 3181 W. Highway 50, Tuesday evening has been identified as Omar Gerardo Flores, 25, according to the Emporia Police Department.

Flores is listed in critical condition at the University of Kansas Hospital, Lt. Ed Owens of the Emporia Police Department said this afternoon.

According to a press release by the Emporia Police Department, Emporia police officers responded at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday to the motel after receiving a report of shots fired and someone injured. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, officers found a 25-year-old male subject in a vehicle who had been shot multiple times,” Owens said in an earlier press release.

Owens said in a press release that the shooting was deliberate and not random.

“The shooting subject is known to police,” Owens said. “Investigators are working on developing the motive for the shooting at this time.”

This is too bad. I hope they catch the shooter.... and those that decided to gang up on a young man at Beer 30 last Saturday night breaking his jaw into pieces!

commenter455,

Why was that young man outside Beer 30 and not inside?

Guess I don't understand what him being OUTSIDE Beer 30 or INSIDE that matters? Sometimes people have to step outside, to make a phone call, get some cool air, or now thanks to the ban, for a cigarette?

sounds like you two know something about this "fight"?

What's up I haven't heard?

Hope by "you two", you're not including me in the knowing something. I don't even live in Emporia or Kansas anymore. I was just confused by paulkersey's comment about being outside and not inside.

generally speaking, if you don't go looking for trouble, you won't find any.

He was not looking for trouble! He got ganged up by 5 guys! A bunch of cowards!!

paulkersey,

Who said anyone was outside Beer 30 to begin with??? The comment said "at Beer 30". And, I do believe LandoftheFree to be completely accurate in that he was NOT looking for trouble and was jumped by more than 1 person... who all evidentally thought they were pretty cool and going to get away with it... but we'll see - the legal system is very slow in this town, but eventually it will catch up with them! And, the Beer 30 owner(s) and bouncer(s) know who they are but failed to give any names to the police (like they had no idea who they were).... initially anyways haven't heard any updates lately

paulkersey,
He was probably outside because we haven't invented teleportation technology yet. Maybe eventually we'll be able to teleport from inside the bar to your car or home, but for now we actually have to go outside to walk to the car or home.
What are you insinuating? Even IF he was jumped while smoking, the same thing could have occurred while walking to his car. It sounds to me that you are misplacing the blame or making excuses for those responsible. I can hear them in court now…”It wasn’t our fault we broke his jaw, your honor. He was smoking outside due to the ban, so we had to do it.” Yeah, that defense will hold up. Besides, are you telling me people don’t get ever get beat-up indoors? My point is that it could have happened anywhere regardless of the location or smoking ban. Oh, I forgot. Nobody ever got beat-up, killed, raped, etc… before the smoking ban. Yeah right!

commenter455,
Indeed. The Beer 30 owners tend to work on the "good ol' boy" system when it comes to getting unruly patrons in trouble. If you know the owner, you can get away with anything in there.

Justice will prevail, and I hope that the bouncers who wouldn't let him back into safety, before they broke his jaw get in as much trouble as the 5 guys bragging about jumping a 5' 2" guy that was trying to go to his car. Oh by the way he doesn't smoke!

I never said he was anything. From what I understand, he was outside because he was "removed" from the premise for causing trouble. This has not a thing to do with the smoking ban. Maybe the guy actually deserved it... That's all I'm saying. But you all do bring up some interesting points as to why the smoking ban isn't such a good idea after all...

NOBODY deserves to have 5 guys beat them up as bad as it seems this guy did. I don't condone fighting one bit and it makes me sick, but at least make it a fair fight. I hope they catch the guys that did this. It's just not right.

You would think some of these people could use a chat room to go on and on about things. If you don't particularly care for Omar maybe you could stray from this article and utilize another for your conversations. Omar was loved, and he WILL BE MISSED I really hope that the Emporia Police are able to take the time to find whom ever did this, Whether the VICTIM was known by police or not, It is what it is. A MURDER and it needs to be investigated to the fullest as it would be for anyone. OR SHOULD!
