Emporia State women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider has found a point guard to help compensate for the loss of Cassondra Boston and Lacy Corker after next season.
Lawrence High point guard Haley Parker has verbally committed to the Lady Hornets, the second player in the Class of 2010 to do so.
Parker picked Emporia State over Washburn and several Missouri Valley teams.
“I think the coaches set them apart,” Parker said, “and then I really like the campus and the atmosphere of it.”
Parker averaged 11 points last year as a junior for the Lions, making the All-Sunflower League second team and the Lawrence Journal-World All-Area team. She was a starter on Lawrence’s State champion team in 2008, making the game-winning shot against Goddard in the State championship game at White Auditorium.
Both Boston and Corker are seniors this season, which created a must-fill hole at point guard for the Lady Hornets in 2010-11. Parker believes she’ll fit well in ESU’s system.
“I really like their style of play,” Parker said. “I like to push it and run, and when I was on my visit, I really liked the girls.”
The Lady Hornets also got a recent commitment from Olathe South senior Kelsey Balcom.
Parker’s brother, Daren Parker, redshirted as a freshman for the Emporia State baseball team in 2007 and then transferred to Washburn.
