Emporia State University is on heightened alert after its first case of the H1N1 influenza virus was confirmed late last week.
“A student came into the health center last Wednesday and they did a rapid response and sent it to Topeka,” said Marjorie Werly, ESU’s director of public relations. The virus was confirmed late Friday.
The student, who does not live on campus, was sent home with instructions to stay inside and remain isolated. Werly said the student was checked on this morning and was feeling better.
The case at ESU is the latest in a series of reports of the virus on campuses across the country. Officials are urging people to wash their hands regularly, avoid contact with sick people and to cover the nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
ESU is working with the Lyon County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to monitor the situation.
