Exhibit opening

Artist and ESU student Aston Ludden’s art show, “Meat,” is on exhibit in the senior exhibition through Sept. 18 at the Gilson Memorial Gallery in the art department at King Hall. The opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. today, during which there will be a silent auction of one of Ludden’s art works. Proceeds will go to the Humane Society and the Kansas Rural Center. Quilt display

The fourth annual “Prairie Quilt Display” will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the historic limestone barn at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Votes will be taken for a “favorite quilt”; winners will be announced at 1 p.m. Monday.

Quilting demonstrations will be available all three days and visitors will have the opportunity to learn from National Park Service rangers and local experts about the origins of quilting, traditional designs and modern techniques. Visitor participation on the community quilt is highly encouraged. symphony

Exhibits

• “God Inspires,” paintings by Marck Drennan, will be on display through Sept. 26 at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St. Drennan has sold, auctioned, exhibited and donated art in Panama, Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, Florida and Connecticut. He lives in Emporia and teaches art at the elementary level, stated the news release. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and by appointment. • The Bethany Springer exhibit, “Showcase Showdown,” continues through Oct. 31, 2009, in the Norman R. Eppink Gallery at the ESU Department of Art. The closing reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Bruder Theater lobby. Springer, an assistant professor of art at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, is a sculptor, artist and educator. With the help of ESU students, Springer has produced an installation designed specifically for the Eppink gallery. Gallery hours are 1 to 5p.m. Monday through Friday. Beatles tribute

The opening of the Emporia Arts Council 2009-2010 Performance Season begins with “1964 ... The Tribute” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall on the ESU campus. This event will be a celebration “of the original Beatles American invasion as they appeared on Feb. 12, 1964, at Carnegie Hall” — “1964 ... The Tribute” is the “best Beatles tribute band on earth,” according to Rolling Stone Magazine, stated the news release. For more information, call 340-6475.

Poster contest

The third annual Constitution Day Poster Contest is open to students K-12 (including homeschooled students) to celebrate Constitution Day, Sept. 17, by designing a poster showing how the entrant benefits from the freedoms embodied in the U.S. Constitution, stated the news release from the Johnson County Library. Angel collectors

The Angel Collectors Club of America will meet in Topeka Sept. 18-20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, with early activities to begin Sept. 17. The convention theme is “Angels over Topeka, Follow the Yellow Brick Road.” Members may participate in a “Red Shoe” parade with prizes awarded for the “most amazing shoes,” stated the news release. On Saturday evening there will be an “Emerald City” gala, social and dinner along with musical entertainment and guest speakers. There will be a live auction Saturday evening of an original angel watercolor, donated by by Ann Rothan, artist and children’s book illustrator.
