To hear Emporia High’s coaching staff tell it, the Spartan linebacking corps sounds sort of like a rusty, oxidized 1961 Chevrolet Corvair that’s sporting comfy leather seats and a newer engine.
Maybe not a perfect comparison, but something like that. Because on the inside, the Spartan linebackers will feature a mix of youth and varsity experience that suggests the inside ’backers could be pretty good this year and in the years to come. But on the outside, coach Bill Lowe is still looking for somebody — anybody — to practice well enough to win the starting jobs for Friday night’s opener at Topeka High. Bluntly, he’s challenging the Spartans’ outside linebacker candidates to step up and stand out at the 11th hour.
“Well, we don’t have any (outside linebackers) right now,” Lowe said flatly on Wednesday. “We better find some in the next 24 hours.”
