Shop locally

Thursday, September 3, 2009

I do a lot of embroidery work and was disappointed when Emporia Walmart stopped selling embroidery thread.

We had to drive to Topeka to obtain it. Recently, I was walking past the Second Love store here in Emporia and noticed a sign that said they sold DMC embroidery thread. I checked it out and found they had a full supply of it.

I had shopped in Topeka for a pair of sandals and had no luck. I tried Brown’s shoe store here in Emporia and found just what I wanted. The service I got was excellent.

I needed a special frame for some art work and again I had no luck in Topeka. I tried Tallgrass Frame Shop here in Emporia and not only found the frame I needed, but had the glass for the frame cut while I waited. Several other items were furnished at no cost.

So, Emporians — I say, SHOP EMPORIA — it will save you money and mileage.

The frame shop also has a special board to mount your finished cross-stitch on to frame. I had them frame a very special work I did for my husband. I have bought the board from them to do it myself and they even showed me how to do it.

Wal-Mart sucks and should be avoided whenever possible. Buy local. Buy American.

I like our Wal Mart. People are always very courteous and they carry all kinds of neat stuff. One thing I'm not crazy about is the quality of their fabric so I don't buy it, but I do like the variety of other goods and groceries.

Yoiu're right YY, they do employ many local Emporians. That's a big plus these days.

Just yesterday, I bought a bunch of chemical foot warmers in the Sporting Goods department to send to troops in Afghanistan. They were out of hand warmers, but I'm sure some enterprising young soldier or Marine will figure out how to use foot warmers to keep his fingers warm.

If Emporia had a better variety of clothing stores, I WOULD shop here. But instead, we can shop at JC Penney's, Cato and Maurices in their limited women's or juniors sections and hope we don't end up wearing the same thing as our co-workers or friends. Or we can drop $50 for a t-shirt at the Buckle. Gosh, with choices like this, who wouldn't want to shop in Emporia for clothes???
While Emporia may have some great stores (Second Love comes to mind), overall we have a very limited selection and sometimes the only option is to drive to Topeka, Wichita or KC for variety.

I have a problem with people saying they "HAD TO" drive to so and so for this or that or I "NEED" this or that. No you don't. All your needs can be found here. Your wants, maybe not. Stop confusing the two.
"embroidery thread"? A need? Really?

I find most everything I need here in town, but fashion and quality IS a problem for the young ladies of my home. I've found myself buying more and more on-line to save money as there are many bargains on the www. Sure the risk is higher for fraud and scams on-line, but I guess I've been real lucky because I've not had a bad experience to date. It's a pretty easy choice to make when I can buy an item off the internet, pay S&H with insurance, get the item shipped on overnight shipping, and still get it for 25-50% less than what it sells for locally.

Ohhhhh, seriously, you just committed a real heavy no-no with regards to embroidery thread. We who do needlework are very particular about our threads.

When Wal Mart decided to stop selling embroidery and crochet thread, many had to go out of town because hobbyists need their supplies.

Now, I'm a thread snob so I like to buy my embroidery thread either online or at Prairie Pieces Quilt Shoppe where they have a marvelous, high-quality selection. They have stamped patterns in great variety too.

I remember when Fabric Corner decided to relocate in Topeka. It broke my heart to be without fabric so I began to shop online or go out of town. Then when Prairie Pieces came to town, yippee! You see, I won't buy lesser quality fabric from Wal Mart because for the time and talent it takes to make a quilt, why waste it on poor quality fabric that stretches or unravels and generally won't hold up to all that handling.

Like neighbor and YY, I too have taken to shopping online and have been very satisfied with the quality and variety. Often, online stores offer free shipping when they are having a sale. It looks like Fed Ex and UPS is doing a land-office business.

Prairie Pieces is a fantastic store. However, I don't sew or quilt. I agree, there is no variety for clothing here. Or for food for that matter.

I guess in the sense that all we ultimately "need" is food, water and oxygen, you're right. Emporia does have those things.

You know, I am always amazed, when someone, up and says, " everything you " need " can be found right here in Emporia " !
To me this kind of comment is another example of people dictating to others exactly what their needs are or should be !
How in the world does anyone have the uncanny ability to absolutely know what another persons needs may be and that what they need can absolutely found locally ?
Not everyones needs are the same !
I am by no means advocating shopping elsewhere, by all means shopping locally benefits Emporia, but not everthing everyone may need can be found in Emporia !

Emporia is such a convenient place to shop, I don't even have to get off my couch! You give me a laptop and internet connection, and I can shop in Emporia all day long! Heck, I can even do it on my phone! I think today I am going to go sit in Wal-Mart and order everything online, and then leave!

YY4U,

I went to a local business (*cough Help Desk cough*) to find an item I needed. They told me they didn't carry it, but could special order it for me. They proceeded to whip out a laptop, and did a search on Google, and said they found exactly what I was looking for, and would be more than happy to special order it for me, but would have to charge me a 10% "finders fee". I didn't say one word, walked out the door, went home, punched it in to Google, ordered it myself, and saved the 10% "finders fee."

Ridiculous.
