The last newspaper printed at The Emporia Gazette couldn’t have rolled off the press in a more public way.
Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw and his USA Network crew were in town Monday morning to record the end of more than 114 years of in-house publishing of the paper started by William Allen White.
The piece that results from the shooting on Monday is expected to be broadcast next year, in conjunction with Brokaw’s documentary, “American Character Along Highway 50,” and the monthly updates planned as “Dispatches From the Road” vignettes.

An era has ended and a new one has begun. I had the pleasure of buying the first paper off the press at about one thirty today. My grandfather was the first to sign up for the tv cable company, which was owned by the White Corporation. I am thankful that we have a hometown family owned newspaper as compared to an out of town corporation. Thanks to the Emporia Gazette our community will receive some national recognition. Today more than ever before, our nation needs some one like WILLIAM ALLEN WHITE to be a grass roots spokeman for the people. In my opinion, the only person that even comes close is Ron Paul, who wants to audit the Federal Reserve and find out where all the trillions of dollars are going. The everyday kindness of the backroads of the FLINT HILLS more than makeup for all the greed in the headlines.
