ESU loses to Missouri Western

Emporia State held the high-powered Missouri Western offense in check for most of the game Saturday, but still came away with another loss, 29-6.

Just when Emporia State got some momentum and gave itself a chance, Missouri Western answered with a 14-play, 71-yard touchdown drive to put the game away.

The Hornets’ big play came on an interception by Travon Brooks in the fourth quarter that Brooks returned 38 yards to the MWSU 10-yard line. Kevin Smart ran for a touchdown on the next play, pulling the Hornets to within 16-6.

ESU failed to convert the two-point conversion, which would have made it a one-score game.

Following Western’s long TD drive in the fourth quarter, Andre Sloan El threw his second interception to Western’s Shane Simpson, who returned it to the ESU one-yard line. Two plays later Thomas Hodges scored a one-yard touchdown for the game’s final score.

The ESU offense moved the ball with some success in the first half, racking up 75 rushing yards but the Hornets struggled to move the ball in the second half and turned it over three times.

Sheldon Smith, who started at quarterback, led the Hornets with 68 yards on 20 carries. Kevin Smart added 62 yards on 14 carries.

The ESU passing offense was virtually nonexistent. Smith was 0-for-6 with an interception, and Sloan El was intercepted twice and threw for 87 yards.

ESU drops to 2-8 overall and 1-8 in the MIAA. For complete coverage of Saturday’s game, check Monday’s Gazette.

C'mon now we are going to try out two cheerleaders for kicker next week and one of the band members played quarterback in junior high. It does sound like we have had alot of injuries but thats part of the game and of the league every team has injuries. It justs seems like we are not ready to compete yet, who can you blame for not being prepared.

ESU didn't miss a kick. Actually thought they competed pretty well.. Missing top 3 QB's (Sloan El played, but sparingly and only a hit away from being done) did pretty well at times. The "D" was best this year. Western has scored a lot more than 29 on EVERYONE else!!! Trying appreciate little successes in a season that's been a bummer. Look for better things because they are doing the right things - just haven't very good luck/results thus far. Rome wasn't built..... you know the story. Go Hornets!

Dear President Lane,

It is time that you step up to the plate and change the direction of the football staff. I realize it might be somewhat difficult since your arrival from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith did not even field a football team. However, you have made us believe that you have both the ability and the passion to fix this disaster.

Becoming a bottom feeder at this level is embarrassing to the town and would dictate your assistance in changing the direction of this sinking ship.

jscott,
I agree. I would also like to add that Weiser should be out the door since he is the one that hired Higgins. I don't like being embaressed on Saturdays. We need to make a change.
