In a season full of losses, injuries and disappointment for Emporia State, Kevin Smart helped bring a little bit of joy to the Hornets last week at Truman State.
Smart had some help — he’ll be the first to tell you that — but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the Hornets rode Smart to victory, a point that tight end Dominic Mirocke emphasized after the game.
“He’s nothing but a horse,” Mirocke said.
Smart ran 30 times for 206 yards and two touchdowns, including the overtime game-winner against Truman. As was the case in that game, Smart has been the most reliable and consistent force in the ESU offense this season, which was not what coach Garin Higgins would have predicted coming into the season — or even going into the Truman game.
