Lebo crushes crest to go to 9-0

Friday, October 30, 2009

Lebo finished the regular season 9-0 with a road mercy-ruling of Crest on Thursday night, ending a 50-0 victory in the third quarter.

Cole Brockelman scored three touchdowns — two on the ground, one receiving — and ran for 101 yards for the Wolves in just 12 carries. Lebo also liked seeing Devon Johnston, who’s been recovering from a broken leg, get back on the field as the Wolves prepare for the Eight-Man I playoffs. Johnston carried only five times, but was effective with 32 yards — and he made an impact on punt returns, totaling 85 yards on four runbacks.

“Finally getting everybody back and healthy, and you can see how many people caught the ball and ran the ball,” said Lebo coach Butch Jones, whose team logged 241 yards on the ground from eight different rushers. “Devon’s not quite 100 percent, but he looked a lot better tonight. He tried to play a little bit that Madison game (last week) and couldn’t go. It obviously helps having him back — gives us a lot more versatility in our offense.”

Brockelman got things started with a 23-yard scoring run, and Lebo hit another big play when Alex Linsey caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Trevor White later in the quarter. A 2-point run by Brockelman made it 20-0.

White threw two more TD passes in the second quarter — an eight-yarder to Caleb Weiss and a 22-yard strike to Brockelman — and finished an efficient 9 of 12 for 147 yards.

Lebo’s defense held Crest to just one first down and 35 yards of total offense.

With a Lyon County League title and Eight-Man I District 2 championship in their hands, the undefeated Wolves will open the playoffs Tuesday when they play host to Frankfort. The playoff appearance will be Lebo’s 11th in the last 13 seasons.
