A Texas Hold ’Em tournament to raise money for the area Big Brothers Big Sisters organization is planned from 4 to 10 p.m. Nov. 8 at Bruff’s Bar and Grill, 2640 W. 18th Ave.
“It’s a no-limit Texas Hold ’Em tournament,” said Executive Director Courtney Gagan.
The Poker Pub of Topeka, which puts on tournaments throughout the area, will set up Bruff’s appropriately for the event. Card tables with felt tops and other professional-type accessories will be part of the atmosphere, she said.
Bruff’s has donated the space for the tournament, though regular service also will continue to be available and admission will be charged only for people who want to participate.
The cost to get into the game is a suggested donation of $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
“Once you’re in, you’re in to stay,” Gagan said. “Once you’re out of chips, you’re done.”
People who want to continue to play, however, may donate another $25 for additional chips.
Big Brothers Big Sisters, located in the Kress Building at 702 Commercial St., serves youths in Lyon, Chase, Coffey and Morris counties.
“Bigs,” the term used for adults who volunteer to participate, are needed, with a more pressing need for men to be assigned to boys already on a waiting list.
“We are still looking for volunteers,” Gagan said. “We’re always in need of volunteers. ... The girls are pretty much taken care of; it’s the males that we struggle with.”
No set amount of time is required for interaction between the bigs and the littles, she said. Some adults choose to spend several hours a week, doing activities that both the adult and the child enjoy; others may spend as little as 45 minutes a week. The choice remains up to the adult.
“You can go and just have lunch with the kiddo each week,” Gagan said. “Who doesn’t have time to do that?”
People who want to volunteer to help may call Gagan at 342-5645.
