Board hears about H1N1 plans

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

The Lyon County Health Department will host an H1N1 vaccination clinic to priority groups Thursday, officials told the center’s board of directors Tuesday.

The health department has been allotted 1,808 doses of flu mist and multi-dose vials of the H1N1 vaccine — the department has received 1,700 of those and 966 doses have been given between the health department and the hospital, said Renee Hively, director of public health. The center has 691 doses on hand and the hospital has 43. The target groups that will be eligible for vaccination on Thursday at the health department are children ages 2 to 9, pregnant women and health care workers. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lyon County Health Department/Flint Hills Community Health Center.

When determining priority groups, the health center follows the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and the State of Kansas, said Ann Mayo, public health officer.

Mayo said the public should be listening for the most current information about H1N1 as it changes rapidly.

“What we’re told when we get in here could change in an hour,” Mayo told board members.

Mayo also advised the public to stay home if they are sick and not infect others.

“If you have flu symptoms, stay at home and treat them,” Mayo said.

In other business, board members discussed the center’s financial report for September, which saw a net loss of $75,687.51. The center, however, had budgeted for a loss of $84,460.46. Year-to-date operational loss is $388,659.49 but Jones Fund money of $123,000 will be coming in and will offset some of that loss, said Betty Murrell, chief financial officer.

In other matters, the board approved amendments to the 2010 budget and a new medical and dental abbreviations list. The board tabled the 2009 Kids Count data until next month, when a presentation will be given regarding the data.

From written reports, the board learned:

F September 340B activity reported by Graves indicated that 971 prescriptions were dispensed to 591 patients. The average cost to the client was $6.39 per prescription with the average cost to patients greater than 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level at $4.62.

F The boiler project is on schedule for completion in November.

F The dental clinic was open 20 days in September. There were 625 patient visits, which averages out to be approximately 31.25 visits per day.
