A small group of parents and grandparents heard about a new drug-abuse prevention program during a Pizza and Prevention Night on Monday at Lowther North Intermediate School.
The event, part of Red Ribbon Week activities, introduced “the notMYkid National program” and provided free pizza and free FirstCheck drug-testing kits for up to 200 audience members who completed a survey after the presentation.
The drug kits test for the presence of marijuana, methamphetamines, antihistamines, Ecstasy, amphetamines, opiates, benzodiazipenes, methadone, barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants and oxycodone.
Parents of children grades 5 through 12 were notified of the meeting, which also was publicized through posters and in news media. Fewer than 30 attended.
The size of the group, however, lent itself to a conversational exchange among audience members and the program presenters, Emporians for Drug Awareness executive director Teresa Walters, Assistant County Attorney Nick Heiman, Emporia Police Chief Gary Smith and Investigations Division Lt. Ed Owens.
