From spooky activities to alternatives offered by local churches, there will be a lot to do this Halloween season in and around Emporia.
Thursday
• Holiday Resort offers “Howlin Trick or Treat” for four-legged costumed spooks and goblins. All pets must have shots and be friendly. Treats will be provided, and tricks are encouraged. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
• “The Rocky Horror Show,” 7:30 p.m., Albert Taylor Hall in Plumb Hall, Emporia State University. Box Office 341-6378.
• Halloween Haunted House to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation will run from 4 to 8 p.m. next to Wheat State Pizza, 1120 Commercial St. Kids 12 and under are $1 and individuals 12 and older are $2.
Friday
• Day cares are encouraged to bring their princesses and superheros to Holiday Resort for trick or treating from 9 to 11 a.m. Adults should accompany the children.
• ERC Halloween costume party, 10 to 11 a.m., Emporia Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave. There will be crafts, a costume contest, candy scramble and games.
• The Granada will show “Twilight” starting at 7 p.m. with doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $4.
• Fear Factor lock-in, 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., Rollers. Admission is $20 and includes skate rental, two slices of Gambino’s PIzza, doughnuts, orange juice and milk.

On Halloween
• Starting at 8 a.m. at the Emporia Farmers’ Market, Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street. A pumpkin decorating contest will take place at the market. Bring a decorated pumpkin to the kiosk between 7:45 a.m. 8 a.m. Market shoppers will vote for their favorite pumpkins. Prizes will be awarded for the spookiest, goofiest and prettiest (kids’ division) and scariest, most original and designer (adults).
• ESU Homecoming Parade, 9:30 a.m., downtown Emporia.
• Spooky sewing day, Lyon County Extension Office, 2632 W. Highway 50. The Flint Hills Sewing Guild is holding the sewing day. Participants will be making fabric drawstring bags for overseas troops or bring your own sewing project to complete. Bring portable machines and sewing notions. Fabric will be available for the bags.
• Oktoberfest, 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., First Christian Church, 202 E. 12th Ave. Lunch of bratwurst or polish sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and pie along with root beer for a $6 suggested donation.
• Granada Theatre Open House, 9 to 11 a.m., at the theatre. Free cartoons will be played for visitors.
• Boo in the Zoo, 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia, 75 Soden Road. Treats, fun and games.

• Hallelujah Night, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Church of the New Covenant, 2300 E. Sixth Ave. Only fun costumes allowed. Family night of fun.
• Halloween at the Mall, 6 to 9 p.m., pumpkin carving contest, $2 entry fee and pumpkins must be received by Oct. 27; costume contest, begins at 7 p.m., $2 entry fee; guess how many candy corns contest, entries accepted from 6 to 8:30 p.m.; trick or treating and games, 6 to 9 p.m.; Children’s haunted house, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., children 10 and under only, $2 to enter; take your picture with holiday setup, 6 to 7 p.m.
• Holiday Resort offers trick or treating for all ages of children for the 14th year. Adult supervision is required for the event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. or until the candy runs out, although organizers plan to have “lots of candy.”
• The Neosho Rapids Haunted House. Tickets and concessions may be purchased from 6 to 11 p.m. Hayrack rides to the haunted house start at dusk. The event features a concession stand, a hayrack ride to the haunted house, a haunted maze and a tour of the haunted house.
