Newman Regional Health and Emporia City Commission meeting agendas

Newman Regional Health

A 35-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel issues and quality risk management is on the agenda for the Newman Regional Health Board of Trustees meeting at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the hospital.

The board also will discuss the Do Not Resuscitate policy, which refers to orders to suspend the automatic initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of a cardiopulmonary arrest, according to a definition provided by the board. The policy is one of several items on the consent agenda for the meeting.

Among other items of business are monthly financial report highlights, a request to purchase pulmonary function testing equipment, a motion to increase the number of Newman board of trustees members, a recommendation for an ex-officio member of the Public Building Commission, priorities for physicians needed to be available at Newman, a memorandum of understanding with the Newman Foundation, and a report from board chairman Dr. Kendall Wright about a letter of resignation.

Emporia City

Commission

The possibility of naming an Emporia street in honor of NASCAR star Clint Bowyer and a proposed extension to the Hill’s plant are two of the items on the agenda for discussion at the city commission’s study session Wednesday at 10 a.m. in city conference room 1 A and B.

The proposal to name a street after Bowyer came up before Bowyer’s fundraiser in August, said city manager Matt Zimmerman.

“We thought it was a good idea, so I thought I’d put it on the agenda and see if the commissioners have any interest,” Zimmerman said. “And I think that they do.”

Commissioners also will discuss a proposal to extend the deadline for construction on the Hill’s plant.

According to the agreement between Hill’s and the city, construction on the plant was to have been completed by the end of this year.

“Hill’s has requested an extension on their deadline to June 30 because they’re not going to be able to get their plant done by Dec. 31,” Zimmerman said.

Other items on the agenda for Wednesday’s study session include:

• a report on the city’s Clean Sweep project.

• review a draft Community Initiated Development policy.

• review a proposal for entrance signs to the city.

• discuss changing stop signs on Oak Street to yield signs.

• discuss removing the stop signs on Weaver Street at Sixth Avenue.

AN IDEA.

Name the round-about after Clint and Remove any speed limit on it:)

Actually it seems like a good idea.

Clint Court?
Clint Circle?
Bowyer Drive?
I like Bowyer Drive.

Of course the city needs to extend the deadline for the Hill's plant. Has everyone on these blogs driven by that place?
It is HUGE!

GOOD ONE!

Emporia is proud of Clint Bowyer, but it is not always a good idea to name something like a street after someone who is still alive. Just ask the people at Wichita State University about Rusty Eck baseball field. Remember he got in major trouble with the law.

I am against naming streets after people in athletics and sports. Many donate a lot of money which is good but their true personalities and attitudes about themselves can be rather different then when they are center stage, which is the case here. I would like to see streets named after true heros like those who fight for our freedom and our rights.

you're right, joaquin. just glad jeremy mayfield isn't from Emporia.

I heard that its Graham Street they are naming after Bowyer. What about all the businesses that will have to change all their advertising and paperwork to reflect the new street name. And I agree that you run the risk of something negative coming up about the "famous person" you are naming a street after. Do you go back and change it back when that happens?

I met Clint Bowyer once before he was rich and famous. We had a brief conversation about dirt track racing which I was involved in a number of years ago. Other than that I know nothing about him.

He however has achieved admirable success in his chosen field and for whatever his reasons has returned something back to his hometown.

I have no problem with a street being named after him and sometimes wonder how much of the opposition to anything his name is attached to doesn't just go back to some petty high school jealousies. JMO

An idea, just put a price tag on having a street sign named after you. In reality it all boils down to money anyways right? It's either money donated or notoriety gained and capitalized on, at least this way everyone that wants a sign has a way to obtain one.

I remember when they put up the YY sign on a road west of Emporia. I still haven't been told what I did to get a road named YY. I can assure you, I have not donated one red cent into any commissioners pocket if that is what you are thinking.

YY4U.......

Your post reminded me of seriouslyfolks. I hope I'm not committing a no-no here....if I am just tell me.....but does anyone know what happened to him? I miss his zany post sometimes.

biscuitboy, I am flattered that you would compare my writing to those of the most awesome seriouslyfolks but, I can say that I am not seriously R. I too have a concern as well. I haven't read anything from him since they started handing out drug test kits to parents. I hope he is doing well.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they renamed Road YY to someone who will pay good money for that sign as long as a small portion goes to purchasing a cello and teaching children to play it. Cello's make such a relaxing sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU_QR_FTt...

Since Emporia is the founding city of Vets Day, lets rename several streets and give each of them the name of a well know military person.

Does it have to be a street? How 'bout...

"The Clint Bowyer Clock Tower"
or maybe
"Bowyer Aquatic Center"

I think the glorious clock tower would be fitting because we marvel at it the same as we marvel at Clint's stellar career.
He likes to donate a lot to the Aquatic Center, so he should get some kind of recognition...

Wait a second... what about the roundabout? It’s perfect! “The Clint Bowyer Roundabout” Folks could come from miles around to drive in circles just like ol’ Clint does for a living!

'enry

At least Bowyer has accomplished something of note in his life....and has earned enough money to give some of it back. So far I haven't seen any recognition of your accomplishments around town....unless it would be for single handedly irritating every one you come in contact with.

word has it that Seriously R. Folks is busy trying to grow some of that newfangled artificial turff to sell to the school boardl His electronic parking meters didn't meet city specs and the reunion tour of Logjam fell through due to logistical problems, ( the band bus didn't have enough luggage space for all of the wheelchairs).

Dang! and I was really looking forward to listening to Logjam!

biscuitboy,
You know nothing of my work! >: -o
Besides, what's wrong with having a clock tower named after you? Are you saying Clint would be ungrateful if we named the roundabout after him? I t’was only joking around, anyway. I wasn’t trying to be mean.
My point was that re-naming a street could create a lot o' costly problems for businesses, residents, map-makers, pizza delivery boys, etc. Why not name somethin' else after him?

Why not go out by the municipal airport and build a circle dirt race track? You could name it after Clint Boyer and I'm sure he would like that better than some street with a speed limit and stop signs.

Posted by biscuitboy (anonymous) on November 10, 2009 at 12:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

YY4U......now there is a great idea. I spent a few years involved in circle track dirt racing and would love to have a track close by where I could go on a Friday or Saturday night.

Only one problem.....any type of car racing takes a lot of money and with the economy as it is it would be very difficult to draw a decent field of cars. It would be nice though

'enry....it sounded to me as if you were belittling Bowyer and his sport...if not I apologize. Like I said earlier I don't know him personally....only having met him once before he was even involved in NASCAR. So none of this is personal to me.

buscuitboy, You would be surprised how many people from Emporia and the surrounding communities load a dirt racer on a trailer and tow it to Thunder Hill or Whiskey Lake every Friday during the season. With Whiskey Lake closing, Emporia could be the premier track in the region. Dirt tracks are not just for cars either. Whiskey Lake has benefited from the quad race fans too.

I've suggested to Clint and his family that maybe they should build a quality dirt track near Emporia, think of the $$$ that would bring to town. Clint owns a dirt racing team himself that does very well and look at all of the attention Tony Stewart's ElDora track garners.

Eldora is King of the dirt tracks....or at least it was when I was involved in the sport down in Arkansas. In fact we used to run at the old Fort Smith, Ark. track back when Mark Martin would still show up occasionally. But Kenny Essery out of Galena, Mo was the big dog there at that time.

Posted by biscuitboy (anonymous) on November 11, 2009 at 4:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I should have added Larry Phillips, also out of southern Missouri, to my big dogs list.
