Halloween is rapidly approaching, and the Emporia State University Theatre will perform “The Rocky Horror Show” this week, a show that began as an experimental musical in London’s pop/glam rock scene in the 1970s.
A company of 38 and a cast of 12, along with five band members, set designers, costume designers, director, choreographer, vocal and music director, will present the show and have been hard at work rehearsing for the past several weeks.
“There’s a great deal of choreography and movement in the show,” said Director Jim Bartruff. “There’s not a lot of dialog but what dialog there is tells the story.”
Bartruff said the underground success of the musical led to larger productions in Los Angeles and New York and a film adaptation that became the cult classic known was the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
“The movie became popular due to its frequent midnight showings in cities and university towns across the U.S.,” Bartruff said. “These midnight showings spawned audience participation events like throwing props at the screen, sing-alongs and dressing in costume.”
ESU’s version will be tamed down to control audience participation. Audience participation kits will be sold at the production.

This play is far to liberal for me. It involves a transvestite and Dr. Frank-N-Futer lusts for a musle bound boy named Rocky.....This is your tax dollars in action. It seems to me that each generation of ESU theature tries to out shock the last one. This reminds me of a quote by William F Buckley Jr. who said, "I'd rather be governed by the first 2,000 names in the Boston Directory than by the faculity of Harvard.

Probably best if you just stay home and listen to the sound of your own voice.
This play and subsequent movie have been cult classics for close to 4 decades.
I am more than happy to have my tax dollars going towards RHPS......Especially if it keeps close-minded blowhards at home.

Way to jerk the leash back on the old dog, Joe Strummer.
However I don't believe reddog is all that close-minded.
Used to see his ride at the Orleans Club quite often, so I know he is a fan of "Dance"
